Adrian Roks, 37, will not be eligible for parole for 10 years after being convicted of second-degree murder. The Crown said Roks planned the Christmas Day 2001 fire at the Woodbine Building Supply on Danforth and Woodbine Avenues so he could claim more than $3 million from his insurance company. The blaze erupted into a six-alarm fire that required more than 170 firefighters to bring it under control. More than 50 families had to be evacuated from their homes. Anthony Jarcevic was killed after using gasoline and other accelerants to light the fire inside the building. Another accomplice who was also inside was badly disfigured. "For a quick buck you caused the death of Anthony Jarcevic, seriously disfigured a co-conspirator and endangered the lives of ordinary citizens," Madam Justice Gloria Epstein said on Tuesday as she passed sentence. "For your greed and stupidity you will pay dearly and so will your family." Roks was convicted in the summer of second-degree murder. While the judge said Roks didn't intend for anyone to die in the arson scheme, she said he was involved in an "unlawful object" and knew the fire was "likely to cause death." The owner of the building, John Magno, will stand trial for second-degree murder next year. Source |
