The whole point is that government was not intended to be a social and community outreach project. It was meant to protect us from our enemies for the most part. Big government is all about itself, sustaining itself. If the government can convince the people that we can't do it on our own and that we need them, then it wins. And we lose our freedom right along with it. The democrats, and even some republicans, want to control the people. You don't need a militia to do that, you just need to train the people to be dependent upon the government. Pretty soon they think they can't do it on their own anymore. Then the government has won. Every little thing the government does for the people, no matter what it is, is creating a slipperly slope of dependence upon it.
