Alan,
I use sun globes and have never had a problem with raccoon eyes since i have started using them. I know if I had a problem my boyfriend would tell me so I don't have to worry about walking around looking like a freak and not knowing that. If I go in the booth, I just use winks and it works just as good. When I'm in the bed I rotate the sun globes about half way through the session as well.
If you already have the raccoon eyes I like the suggestion of using a lotion with the bronzer in it. Maybe something like DC Glow would be good. Or you could just be comfortable enough with your manhood to go get some make up and use it to cover them.
As far as the people that don't wear eye protection that is obviously your perogative. I wear it so I can honestly say to my customers that I do and because I don't think its worth the risk of what might happen to my eyes if I dont. Whether it could really happen to me, I dont care. My grandmother has gone her whole life smoking and hasn't gotten lung cancer, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pick up smoking.
I'm pretty sure my state requires me to make my customers wear them, so I do.
