Yes, you will have to remove the shell of the top canopy to gain access to the lamps. Have another person handy so when you have it all disconnected, you can each grab an end and remove it off the bed. Keep in mind that once you have it removed, the canopy will be lighter, and it will want to stay in it's up position, so have a weight or a prop rod to keep it down.
While you have the top off, make sure to clean all the filter glass at the same time. Pain in the butt, but once it's done, you won't have to fool with it very often.
Should take you about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to do it all.
