Default age limit on tanning in BC?

What's happening in BC with the issue of age limit for tanners? Heard provincial gov't is going to set limits.

Haven't heard anything myself. But for B.C. I would recommend asking Frank at Can-Tan in Vancouver. He seems to be ontop of that stuff out there.

Salons in Victoria B.C. are facing some serious regulation as the CRD (Capital Regional District) looks at banning tanning for anyone under 18. Here's the story:

Cancer Society backs Stanwick

As happened when the clean air bylaw was first proposed for Greater Victoria, Dr. Richard Stanwick has drawn criticism in some circles for his views on teens in tanning beds.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority's chief medical health officer is pounding the drum for a proposed Capital Regional District bylaw that would make it illegal for anyone under age 18 to use a tanning bed.
He's not alone in his belief that doing so would help reduce the risk of young people developing skin cancers later in life. The Canadian Cancer Society, echoing a World Health Organization statement, likes the idea and fully backs Stanwick on this issue.

"(We think) getting on record at early stages of controversial issues can help the public better come to grips with the facts," said Barbara Kaminsky, CEO of the society's B.C. and Yukon branch.

Stanwick shepherded the bylaw through approval by the CRD's health facilities planning committee July 20. The bylaw is due to be voted on at an upcoming CRD board meeting but would not come into effect until Jan. 1, 2006.

Stanwick said skin cancer rates are epidemic in B.C. and have doubled over the past 20 years.
Health Canada reports that tanning beds may expose you to five times as much UV radiation as the sun.

A staff report referred to at the July 20 committee meeting pointed to 2002 research showing tanning bed users are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell skin cancer and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell skin cancer than non-users.

While studies into melanomas have linked the skin cancers to excessive exposure to UV rays - both from the sun and tanning beds - Kaminsky said much in this issue has to do with people's beliefs.

"When we think about smoking, a lot of people thought it was cool or that you looked good when you had a cigarette in your hand," she said. "There is a certain amount of people who think you look good if you have a so-called 'healthy tan.'"

When an issue is first presented, some people let their emotions get in the way of finding the real facts, she said. "You can't make an informed decision (that way)."

A Cancer Society news release stated that tanning equipment "emit(s) UV rays that can cause sunburns, premature aging of your skin, and cataracts- Sunburns are linked to the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers and malignant melanoma."

If and when the CRD bylaw is approved, tanning businesses will be also be required to post warnings signs on other issues.

They would be required to indicate that tanning machines, in some cases, cause itching or discomfort and if so, users should "discontinue use immediately and consult a physician." It would go on to say "certain medications (both oral and topical), cosmetics, and lotions applied to the skin increase sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation."

The World Health Organization stated that "governments should pass laws on the responsible use of sun beds, banning their use for all people under 18." The WHO pointed to the popularity of tanning machines as a key factor in the rapid increase of skin cancer, particularly among young women in Europe and North America

Pretty much every salon around here that has heard of this is going to be there in Victoria on Sept 14. ( not sure of the time yet) Alot of big wigs in OUR tanning industry is going to be there, including most of the distys out west. If you can be there to show your support, anyone, thats great, Just remember, unless you have written proof of anything you are about to say right there with you, keep your mouth shut, let the big wigs do the talking. Don't need some hotheaded salon running on about things they can't prove. Media would have a field day with it all.IF it goes through in Victoria, you can almost bet it will sweep across the country. So even if you are a few provinces away, come over and help stop it now! There realy isn't all that many salons on Vancouver Island, so any mainlanders would help.

Hey James, good reason to come over here! see my new salon! lol

Wish I could, I would love to camp with my RV on the west side of the island, right on the ocean. There must be some nice sites around there somewhere.

But with JASON in swing, kinda hard to take another vacation and spend the labour. Just finished wasting 3k on bars and gates for my one store.

My frustrations! None of the salons that I have talked to on the island had any idea this is going on!! Why arn't the disty's saying anything to their customers? Apparently I've heard Can Tan and maybe Sunwest will be there in Victoria on Sept 14, so why don't their customers know?? How are we to fight what we don't even know it's taking place?

Hence the phrase "If tanning is Outlawed Only Outlaws will TAN"
Sorry, couldn't resist, some thing the shirts were not inline with our industry, but what do you think? If you can't tan at any age is that being an outlaw to have a golden bronze colour?

Well I visited my sorta competition yesterday. (gym owner but gets more teens cause he's cheaper) Told him what was happening. He made a valid point. Teens can choose to get an abortion, but may not be aloud to tan! Oh, and we hand keys to teens to drive, I'm sure far more die from accidents than ever even get skin cancer, even in their later years of life! maybe we should label driving as a carsinogen (how ever you spell it)

after one of the doctor speakers said that melenoma in teens was on the rise, Doug I believe was his name from Fabutan pulled up a graph from the Canadian Cancer society website, live, cleary showing Melenoma declining with increasing momentum in teens. The look on the docs faces was priceless. So the next docs tactics was to liken tanning to child abuse.
