Fabutan calls on Canadian Dermatology Association to modify its sunlight message


TORONTO, Nov. 16 /CNW/ - For years the sun has gotten a bad rap and afterplaying a major role in human evolution through vitamin D production it can nolonger be ignored; the time has come for the message about sunlight to shiftto a more reasonable place.






Doug McNabb, President of Fabutan was in Toronto today calling on theCanadian Dermatology Association to modify their messages about the sun.

• Sunscreen companies have claimed sunlight puts people at risk for skin cancer. The truth is according to the Canadian Cancer Society no more Canadians are dying now than 20 years ago.
• Dermatologists are promoting the message that people are dying from being exposed to the sun. However, the Canadian Dermatology Association gets $5,000 for each sunscreen product being able to use their logo - there are more than 100 of such products all listed on the CDA website.
• Without the sun, life would not exist. Vitamin D production is directly linked to sun exposure and recently it has been scientifically demonstrated that we need more than originally thought. Unfortunately for six months a year, Canada's northern geographic location means there is little vitamin D produced. Now for the good news. Responsible indoor tanning increases vitamin D production - in fact, one tanning session can provide up to 10,000IUs of the vitamin.

To acknowledge the sun's contribution to human evolution, Fabutan ishosting its first ever National Sun Day, Nov. 18.
