Default Bringing American equipment into Canada

Hey guys, I'm new to the business and just starting my own salon. I've found some items that I'm buying secondhand from an American salon, and was wondering if there's anything I need to know about bringing it across the border. The biggest thing I guess is are their gonig to be any significant fees that come up. For example, the item I'm buying is roughly $8,000. Besides the actual shipping company costs, what else is likely to pop up, and who am I likely to have to pay? Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Contact a local customs broker.

Shipping the item and your brokerage fees can be your biggest cost.

It all depends on where the unit was manufactured.

Let's say it was manufactured in the US. I'll check on it, but I'm pretty sure. Anything manufactured in Canada, US, or Mexico, shouldn't have tariffs on it because of NAFTA, right? Has anyone bought stuff for their salon from the States?

You would still have to pay brokerage fees and GST. They duty all depends on where it was manufactured.

What brand of equipment is it?

I have brought stuff over all the time, new and used. Be carefull with the shipping company, 3 out of the 4 times I have shipped used, it has come damaged. And they will only give you about $1 per pound because it is used equipment if they damage it. Never covers teh cost of the unit.

It's actually some modular walls, made by StructureS

I'm pretty sure they were manufactured in the US.

BTW, when you buy from vendors, do you use an Escrow service? I've done some research and escrow.com seems pretty good. Any thoughts?

I have a very good relationship with my vendors, so I have never had theh need for an esrow account. I would think for a new transaction with someone new, an escrow service would be a smart move.
