| Here's an interview with Doug McNabb president of the Joint Canadian Tanning Association from yesterday. It was a live interview on the Business News Network (Canada's CNBC equivalent) If you follow the link and then watch from the 37 minute point on you will see the interview. http://watch.bnn.ca/squeezeplay/may-2008/squeezeplay-may-20-2008/#clip53973 Interesting that they invited the Canadian Dermatology Association to appear with Doug and they couldn't make it. |

I know he has a tough job, dealing with the press. But , to only talk vit d ,and not to mention escapism and relaxation ect ect when selling the message of tanning is an oversight. I wonder why the derms did not show? Were they going to be asked to swear on the bible or something? |

This past Tuesday, on Canada AM a derm, I think his last name is Cohen, (who was promoting sunscreen use) was asked directly by Bev about the claims that the derm society receives money for selling their "seal of approval" and the connection to derms & $$ from sunscreen manufacturers. He totally ignored the question, claimed that tanning beds only emit UVA and therefore do not produce vitamin D, and that "very soon" regulations are coming for tanning salons to limit minors. It was ridiculous. I emailed Canada AM, purely out of frustration, however I did not receive any kind of response. It's pathetic that a derm can get on national news, and basically say whatever he wants, whether it be factual or not. |

I think the line of questioning led to many of the responses Doug gave and I will mention to him that it might be a good idea to mention some of the other benefits people derive from their indoor tanning experience. He did a pretty damn good job as I watch that show all the time and I've seen the one host chew up and spit out many a guest. |

It made him look like the ignorant liar that he is.Ignoring all of the evidence in respect to vit d ,proper nutrtion and exercise, while lying thru his teeth that sunscreen prevents skin cancer. He made a total ass out of himself. |

First I think JCTA should be applauded for even getting that far, and surely you must realise that time is a limiting factor with TV interviews. Escapism and relaxation are all very well but they haven't driven the masses to tanning salons and never will. To talk about these things will just ensure that no other TV interviews will ever be given. The media want controversy, they want a fight, not escapism and relaxation who cares about that. What will drive the masses to tanning salons is vitamin D production from tanning beds. We should be shouting it from the highest hill each and every day. When there is enough acceptance by the masses that vitamin D is produced by tanning beds and that tanning in a sunbed without burning is a sensible way to obtain vitamin D, then, and only them, will escapism and relaxation also help increase tanners. Also, how many beds in Canada produce UVB ? |

| Super Star Join Date: Nov 2004 Posts: 545 | All beds in Canada produce uvb.And yes I do give Doug credit for getting on there and showing the Canadian people that we are a real business. But my concern is that by focussing on vit d is that the perception becomes that we are trying to become medical.I think that it is very important to talk about vitamin d but to say that you get to de-stress ,escape ,look better and produce vit d will make the point about vit d ,without the "we are the new doctors" effect.Even though we have been doctors in the sense that we keep people from getting sick by using sunbeds. So yes,I commend him.Hats off to Doug and all those who support the cause. |
