This email is to advise you that Ontario MPP Khalil Ramal has introduced a private members bill - BILL 83 to the Ontario Legislature.

Bill 83 calls for a prohibition on selling or supplying tanning services or ultra-violet light treatment services to persons under the age of 19. The prohibition does not apply to ultraviolet light treatments prescribed by authorized medical professionals for conditions prescribed by the regulations.

We are calling for all Ontario Tanning Salons to be proactive in this issue and register to speak in opposition of this Bill. Please see below for the registration information and process. Steve Gilroy of the JCTA will speak on your behalf at the meeting if you wish.

If you don't want Bill 83 to pass - DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Register below. Don't rely on others to fight for you. We need everyone working together. Stand up for your rights. This is your chance to protect your business and livelihood. Take the time to register today.

Bill 83 has passed the first reading May 28 and passed the second reading June 12.

Sincerely,

Uvalux Tanning & Support Team

This bill will likely not see the "UV Light" of day. Pr. members bills rarely get passed. It will languish waiting for committee hearings.

On top of that, the legislature is scheduled to break tomorrow for the summer. Mr. Ramal doesn't likely have the clout in his own caucus to get people to support this bill. However it's a good idea to send the email to the clerk of the social policy committee and get registered. Kudos to the JCTA for getting organized & to Uvalux for sending the mass email.

Not at all Din. As I said, it's a good idea to get registered, which I have already done. (among other things)

What I am saying is, that it's a good thing it will not likely fly. Time is on our side.

this is his quote from the 2nd reading..... maybe he needs to visit a certified tanning salon.

" I brought this bill because I know that a lot of people, especially the youth under 19, go to tanning salons and they sit for one hour or two hours. They want to change the colour of their skin because, for some reason, they think they look sexy or more beautiful, or they want to change their image to show off among their friends, but they don't understand the result of their actions. Most of the time, those actions cause skin cancer. So I think if we had a ban to prohibit people under 19 from using those salons, it would create some kind of safe environment for many youth in the province of Ontario.
Also, those salons open at many different places with no regulations and no educational materials for the people using the salons. Sometimes they sit for many long hours, and that will cause some kind of cancer.
As I mentioned, all the statistics from the Canadian Cancer Society and many other health organizations worldwide show it's caused as a result of ultraviolet, which comes from the sun or from artificial lighting like that in tanning salons. I think it's important for all of us to ban these tanning salons for people under 19 because, as I mentioned at the beginning, their bodies are not mature enough to resist or absorb those lights. Therefore, I think it's our obligation as elected officials to put some kind of ban or regulations to regulate this industry and create some kind of campaign of awareness among the people. Also, before the people use the salons, they have to be educated about the consequences of using or being subject to those artificial lights."

Oh my god!!!

Great report by moe, I have printed it, and contacted my printer, he says 10 bucks each to copy and bind. Din, is that the letter you sent to your local government? How do I find out if my MP, or MPP was at those first readings?

Under-18 Ban just passed in Scotland. UK and AU are all moving in that direction.

I just want to know why our government allows people who have no idea what their talking about to make statements like this!! The longest I ever tanned was 30 mins That was 13 years ago!!!! My god someone should bring this guy up to date!
By the way Chelle majority of bills that make it to the second reading get passed!

Shantilly, what is going though your head ! Do you think a facebook account is going to change Ramal's mind, or anyone else's mind who already thinks tanning is BAD. It looks like another idiot tanning salon owner trying to play on Facebook. Not worth the effort and even if a thousand people comment on it, how will it help the cause ? Gotta shake my head.

I didn't create the facebook group to change Ramal's mind. I created it to create awareness for my clients. Sorry, but around here facebook is "the information portal" for anyone that wants to no anything. It has made people, including the media, aware of what Ramal is trying to do. It has also given people a chance to read Moe's report (which many have done). I'm not """"an idiot salon owner trying to play on facebook""""

What have YOU done about it???

Saw a story on this on CTV news net this morning. They are trying for all of Canada. If this passes, I am looking to sell it all within 5 years. It can only get worse in this communist country.

One of my customer works for CTV. She wanted me to defend tanning salon in an interview about banning teens in BC. I think Mo is the man for the job. Does anyone know how I can get a hold of him??
