Do you get a BSOD (blue screen of death) with an error message when it crashes? It will be at the top of the blue screen, some of the more common ones are "Driver IRQL not less or equal"or "Pagefile in a non-paged area". A restart without any sort of error message usually indicates a hardware failure of some sort. Need some more info though, operating system and installed hardware. Make and model of the PC too if you got it.

Well, it seems I can't edit the post anymore, so I just saw what that you are on XP. What's the make of the fingerprint scanner? Is it a large device or just something simple like a magstripe reader? How does it connect to the PC? USB, serial?

the driver for the scanner is not the proper one. Causing conflict which is why your computer shuts down.

I think i've seen someone have the same problem before.....but not 100% sure.
