I meant to do it on June 21 the longest day of the year but I forgot. It would be interesting if someone metered it with a 5.0 and a 6.0 to find the ratio of UVA and UVB. I don't think it is a selling point just some FYI |

But finally about a week ago such a day arrived: Crystal clear with about 10% puffy white clouds. The UV index reached 8.9. The highest I've ever seen up here ~42°N is about 9.1. A UVI of 9.0 would read 5.0 FDA MED/hr on the 7.0 meter. Model 5.0 would read ~5.8 and model 6.0 would read ~0.38 mW/cm˛. So percent UVB would be 0.38/5.8 = 6.5% When I was in Saipan (15°N) in late April the UVI reached 14.2 !!!!! That would be 7.9 FDA MED/hr. Sun was straight overhead at solar noon... NO shadow. I did not take 5.0 or 6.0 readings. __________________ ![]() ......................Flashback 2001........................ "One of the 'ORIGINAL' TanToday Gang" |

Well a 7.0 meter reads the dose of UV light we divide 240 by the meter reading to determine the length of time it takes to get a maximum safe FDA dose. 5.0 and 6.0 meters measure different parts of the UV spectrum. Divide the amount of UVB by the total amount of UV to get percentage of UVB. Many of the lamps sold have a listed UVB component whether it is 1.6 3.3 5.0 6.5 7.0 8.5 or 10% UVB causes our skin to produce pigment. UVA causes the pigment to oxidize and turn brown. The percent of UVB is not the last word of how powerful a lamp is 1.6% of 200 is more than 5% of 50. I metered the sun because I was bored and curious. According to Solar Steve the sun on Saipan is nearly twice that of what it is here __________________ www.wrightimagesalon.com |
