The best way to sell moisturizers is by smell and feel. Let your customer apply a small amount, smell and feel the product and it will fly!! Also, refer to your moisturizers as tan extenders. Everybody wants their tan to last as long as possible and by using a high quality moisturizer, they will hold their color longer.

My favorite tan extender would have to be Luminous by Matahari. It has a light fragrance (smells like Elizabeth Arden "Sunflowers) and is ideal for your customers that have trouble keeping their skin moisturized (thick, but absorbs nice).

Hope this helps!!

Talking Moisturizers in Tanning Rooms...

I just put 2 of them in inventory and so we will see how they do....I do have 1 of them in my highest level room as all of my rooms have moisturizer for after tan...but depending on the level...depends on the product I put in there...

Like in base level I have Smooth Softie and/or something inexpensive...level II, I have Kisses and/or hempz and so on...

Also have small 2 oz bottles of many types for gifts on monthly packages...I provide them on higher levels with a bag...such as the ones from Sydneys Corner and a couple samples and a 2 oz moisturizer...

P.S. Most of my packages are priced with or without lotion purchase at the same time...and thats when you get the tanning bags...or ditty bags for the guys...the fans go wild...

Now Go Tan Some Hydes ....and TanToday!!! Soo

Angry Won't sell Luminious

Luminous by Maharat (forgive the spelling please) has a primary ingredient of PETROLEUM (on the can it's referred to as petroleat or something like that... it's still petroleum.)
Petroleum is the byproduct of the manufacturing of the crude oil process. It is known to strip the color off of the skin, it's the same product for all intents and purposes as mineral oil. WE DON'T EVER ALLOW OUR CUSTOMERS TO USE MINERAL OIL because it has other long term effects. Recently the American Medical Association offered their opinion that Mineral Oil should not be used internally because it lays on the intestinal tract and prevents absorption of food and nutrition (imagine mother's still putting baby oil on their baby's skin... and we know that babies put their body parts into their mouths....)
Why would we want to sell anything from the salon that has mineral oil in it? Or petroleum/Vasoline? Vasoline sounds like gasoline? Not a mistake.... think gasoline whenever you hear the would vasoline.... which is nothing more than processed crude oil or petroleum.

I did offer after tan moisturizer on a stand outside of the rooms, but found that some of my daily tanners were bathing in the stuff. Why buy when I supply for free. Not anymore, now I keep it upfront at the desk they can still try it but now they can't cover themselves in it.
I sell alot of Hempz and Angel, I have others but they are to perfume smelling. In my larger beds if they purchase a month unlimited we give them a moisturizer, also when anyone buys a lotion we offer moisturizers at 25% off.

I put a few different moisturizers in my rooms for people to try and give free packets of them to customers. They really sell themselves that way. I never understood salons that put Vaseline Intensive care in rooms. If your not using good products why would your customers. Even in our Hair Salon when we wash people's hair we don't use the cheap stuff we use what we sell.

We also refer to step 3(moisturizers) as tan extenderds. Because they are exactly that! Our best seller is Hempz, but Total Immersion (Cal Tan) is a close runner up! TI has a nice fresh scent. It is great for male & female. Hempz is hard to beat! It really moisturizes! But we sell quite a bit of Angle also.
We sell tan extends by smell & feel also. We also let the client know our preference in tan extender. Also presonal testimonies are probably our biggest sales tool! Educating the client is KEY! When they come in for their 1st tan we give them a free sample of tanning lotion & tan extender & at that time we explain the importance of using a tan extender. If we have a client that has tanned a while, when talking we ask which tan extender they use..if they don't use, suggest one or give them a free sample! It usually will result in a sale!
Try Forever After by Austrailion Gold..the smell is vanilla bean..I think..it leaves you feeling like silk! But the fragrance is strong..but the results are fantastic! I really like to use it on my legs...esp after shaving!

Cool

Just sold out a case of Satori Sol Tan Extender (6) in less then a week...Great smell not over bearing and price is right...nice bottle too...

My favorite is Tanzotic Moisturizer....has lotza Emu in it...and softens fast...Put it on your elbows and instantly they turn smooth...and over about a week or so...they stay smooth and now I would only have to apply every couple days...but I still use it daily for the moisture...draw back is 8.5 oz bottle only..

We have a bottle in each room of different moisturizers... Hempz by Supre is still our #1 seller...

and the #2 is Cat's Pajamas by Swanky Girl...

Have a great week...Soo

Default Tan Extender

We sell moisturizers and tan extenders. The tan extenders have the DHA in them, the moisturizers do not. To sell a moisturizer under the pretense that it is a tan extender is going to back fire on your eventually. Customers are not stupid, they've read and seen the advertisement. They will eventually catch on...
sell your moisturizers as moisturizers.
Sell you tan extenders with the DHA in them as tan extenders, and be sure to keep the prices up on the tan extenders for this purpose.

Sorry Jancy, I have to disagree with you. Any quality moisturizor will extend your tan. Dry skin exfoliates faster, moist skin exfoliates slower. If your tan lasts longer because your skin is moisturized is that not extending your tan? Whether or not the product has DHA in it has nothing to do with how well it moisturizes.

Default natural after tan lotion

I'm from eastern Europe, and natural lotions are very fashinable here. I don't offer lotions, just apply it on the skin, that's all. I use "911" from Ukraine. No smell, perfect natural odour of herbs, luxurous after feeling and the required effect.

Exclamation Yin Vrs Yang

At my salon we don't have a problem selling moisturizers to our female clients... but the guys are another story. While it is true that guys are becomming more and more in tune with the whole "skin care" idea... our industry needs to make the scents in the lotions more of a natural clean type scent vrs a flowery or fruity scent. Guys that tan obviously care about how they look and also care about how they smell... they don't want to smell like a pinacolada

We offer Hemps Moisturizer. Its definately my favorite. I have a sample bottle on the front desk and while cutomers are buying their package, they always try it and it smells so freakin good. Thats always the first they'll notice is the smell. But that way you're not pushing them to buy it, its right there and they can try it whenever. We too also keep moisturizers in each room. But seriously if you haven't already, try hempz!!

Fiji's new 2006 Heiress is incredible. Our staff loved it so much that we got rid of Angel, Undercover Angel, Radical Rain, Monsoon and Aqua Tini and only sell ONE now - Heiress.

Its Pink, It smells good and its HOT (in popularity, not tingle).

Hempz is the best for us. It has great ingredients for repairing any damage that tanning can do to your skin. It is a true 12 hour moisturizer with colandula (which is what they use for burn victims) and no alchohol to dry the skin.
We usually purchase the display kit and put the free samples in our new client bags. We also have a bottle sitting on the counter to try.

I must say, the new Hempz tinted stinks bad. I was quite dissapointed. It's not bad at first, but after about 10 minutes (until your next shower) you smell like a bronzer gone bad. I don't care for the Hempz Butter either. I like the container and how thick it is but the smell is bad.

If you want a tinted moisturizer, Supre's Skin System Tinted is great. It has a light clean smell and the bottle shows great presence.

One of my key things is also price. I don't lower too much with the tanning products, but when you are competing with Vaseline and Lubriderm, etc. you have to remember that price could become a factor. We sell our moisturizers for $16.95. They still cost more than the Walmart brands, but not so much that you totally break someone. I also give free bottles to my employees so when that questions comes, "what do you use", I know what their answer will be (the right one).
