Default Psoriasis... Help?

Hi All,

My husband and his whole family have psoriasis - really bad. He is getting treatment for it - which is wonderful, and as soon as I get my equipment, the UV will also help a lot. Problem is that in the winter his skin gets extremely dry. His dr recommended that he use Curel Ultra Healing. Question is... Do any of you have experience with clients with this? I was looking at the ingredients - they don't look like something that would be really moisturizing! The first 4 are: water, glycerin, petrolatum, ceteraryl alcohol (I can't imagine that's good) and Behentrimonium chloride (no idea what this is).

So, do any of you have experience with clients - or yourself - that you could lend some educated advice? I know that this is a very common condition, and I would like to have an educated solution for my clients (and my husband)

Thanks!

PS - I posted in the skin care forum - if that's not where it should be, Mods feel free to move it.

we recommend a non bronzing pure tanning lotion and stay away from products with petrolatum!
worse thing for us, is the mess a client leaves behind all over the floor from their excessive dry skin...wish they would clean up somewhat. how embarrassing for them...employees gag! but on a positive note, knowing tanning helps them is the reward. we instruct them to use our salon quality moisturizers as well. i am switching right now to devoted and i hear their Krem moisturizer is awesome for this condition!!!!! (after tanning or after showering at home)

Thanks! The moisturizer is what I am asking about. I know that the Curel is horrible - but it has seemed to work for him til now. I have not tried Krem - I will have to see if they can get me a sample. I have Hempz hydrosilk now. I will have him try both & tell me which one works better. That will be the one I'll recommend to my customers with the condition

Thanks for the response!

Omega 3 by Fiji blend is specifically for psoriasis sufferers. Its also a quad bronzer( wish it werent) and stains hands if you dont moisturize first but works great for sufferers!
Drs perscribe a tar based lotion and it does not work as well. (gross lotion if you ask me)
We sell a lot to a few people with it and one of our clients had it real bad. i mean horrible!
It took a couple months to go away but it all cleared up completely.
We made him use our stand up booth at first when it was so terrible looking.

I have eczema & my dermatologist recommended the same product. It has helped a great bit. I also only use Dove sensitive skin bar soap. I stopped using the shower gels. All the tanning products have heavy smells to them which is part of the problem. I have tried almost all Major brand tanning moisturizers & none have helped as much as the Curel Intensive Ultra Healing. Some of the tanning moisturizers made it worse.

You won't have to worry about the Petrolatum ruining your acrylics unless you are putting it on just prior to tanning.

Thanks everyone!

I'm not too concerned about my acrylics because I'm looking for a product to recommend for after showering, etc... more of a regular lotion than a tanning product.

The Curel has been working for him... I was just wondering if there were any products that I could carry that may help more.

John - you said you've tried all of the distributors lotions (hempz, uv angel, etc), and the Curel still worked better - in your opinion?? I want what is best for the customer, and if that works the best, then that's what I would recommend

Thanks again!

OK. Do NOT use anything on the skin that is not pH correct. It is critical for people with this to use products that are a 5.5 pH on their skin. That is #1. Next, never use products that contain mineral oil, petrolatum, SD alcohol. That will dry the skin out even more and suck the moisture from the deeper layers of the skin.

This is what I tell my clients:

Tan in equipment with the highest amount of UVB you can get. We have a stand up that is 9.5% and that works really well.

Also, we recommend Arbonne. It is pH correct for the skin. I recommend the cleansing gel for shower, shampoo for hair and scalp, awaken salt scrub twice weekly and for after shower the basic body lotion. That gives my clients a lot of relief.

BTW - petrolatum and mineral oil are both derivatives of crude oil. They are a humectant and will draw moisture to themselves, some from the air, but most from your own skin. They are very dehydrating and should never be used on skin. There is a good thread on mineral oil. I'll see if I can find it and post it here.

Thanks Kathe!

When I first read the ingredients on the bottle, the petroleum & alcohol were what jumped out at me! Alcohol in a lotion sounded crazy!

There was a published study about 2 yrs ago where Vicks vapour rub was used and it also was shown to even help keep it in check. Same study showed improvement with eating salsa the peppers in it are the key, the hotter the better. I am licensed so i can give more advise than most, we all know it but salon owners have to be careful on the claims we make, I can tell you that you probably are more clear in the summer, saying that I find those customers do better in a bed higher in B, they don't well in VHR's or HP units.
I hope this helps.

Eczema is not psoriasis and should not be confused with the other.

Generally eczema sufferers should not tan but Again Fiji blends makes "Tandori" specifically for eczema sufferers.

I agree with kathe that drying of the skin seems not to be right for someone with dry skin, which is why I specifically asked Fiji blends why the quad bronzer in the Omega 3.

I do know It works very well and my clients who have used it for psoriasis love the results as It does clear up the problem.

Kathe, whats in those two products that would cure psoriasis. I've also got it and could use a cure, although I know it's not possible.

There is NO cure for psoriasis. You can alleviate the symptoms using good products but it can always re-occur. The ABC baby wash is extremely gentle, pH correct, has no fragrance, etc. That is key to helping. The skin conditioning oil is a blend of 16 different essential oils and is fabulous. I have my psoriasis clients dab it on their really bad spots just before tanning and it does a fabulous job. I also recommend twice weekly awaken salt scrub and the basic body lotion. Just let me know if you want to try some. Arbonne has a 45-day money back guarantee.

There can also be underlying issues that activate the psoriasis.
* Stress
* Anti-depressants increase the activity
* Infection in the body
* Low function kidneys and liver
* High humidity

If the psoriasis was under control for the most part and all of a sudden nothing helps, see a physician.
