Default esthetician and tanning

wondering if anyone has hired an esthetician to diversify their services but had a problem with them turning people away from tanning.

Yes and No.

We have an esthetician and she is required to only say positive things about tanning.

for what i can afford to pay my staff i cannot expect them to be experts in everything. so i need an esthetician to fill the gap. i would expect a much higher rate of success from that person for skin care services and products. they would have the expertise and time to provide to my clients.

even telling them to be positive doesn't mean they will. i know i would need to be very clear with my expectations up front (contract) and would have to pick someone i knew tanned already.

just worried this could backfire.

50/50 is fair. You are providing the space, the products, taking care of the laundry and all other expenses. They are providing the service.

I do most of the work myself but I have a girl who fills in for me when I'm not here. We do 50/50.

We do put them on the payroll but not as hourly. Just like our massage therapist. They get paid only when they actually work for the services they perform. Our massage therapist is 50/50 as well. We just call them and book an appointment. They are paid on the normal payroll just like our other employees.

Maybe....a 50%-50% should be negotiated. As Kathe said "they are providing the service"...but you are supplying the space, machines, products, utilities, laundry, added insurance, advertising, the clients , papaerwork, and a good majority of the training and education for your aestheticians or tecks...
Maybe consider what they are going to bring to you before you go with a 50-50 split. If a service is 100.00 they will make 50% of that and most likely their tip.. how much does the actual service cost the house? are you deducting what the cost is before the split? I would work the figures on cost first of the treatments, than work the split.

When you arrived at the 40 60 split...may I ask you if you deduct the cost first of your cost as the 'house"? or do you go a straight 40% to the service tech?
Do you make your techs claim their tips?
Do you deduct the charge card fee as part of the split with them? what if a guest puts the tip on their charge card...is the charge card fee-split on the service in your 60/40 and is the tech responsible for the total fee of the tip that is charged? Is that deducted from the techs percentage?

Please don't feel I'm asking you to spill your secrets...
It's just so important that the areas of the pay is 'fair"...for the techs..and the house.. I don't mean to be nosy... it's a discussion and I'm interested in what you see as fair...

I do deduct the fee of the gratuity if it is on the charge card..
and the percentage of the fee on the card is also split..
over a year of techs and services it adds up up up.. and I want everyone to have their area covered. This way no one can claim they are not holding up their end of the agreement.
All this is put in an agreement before we reach a final agreement on the pay of the services they will be doing.
