this has pissed me off for years...15 to be exact as that is when I started selling HP tanning.
Why in GODS name did we call it HIGH PRESSURE ..... I know the tanning beds use High Pressure HID Quartz lighting, but we never ever called regular tanning beds "Florescent Beds" They were just Tanning Beds and Tanning lamps. HIGH PRESSURE is a technical term for the lamps.....we don't call a tanning bed a 12 guage bed or a NUMBER 4 bed because of the wiring we use to hook them up. It confuses customers (and tanning salon employees and owners) ...and making up dumb ass stuff like "Medium Pressure" (thanks Leif) makes it even worse. I don't know what to call beds. We could call them H.O. H.O.R. V.H.O.R. and HP We could call them 100 watt beds vs 160watt beds vs 800watt or 1000watt beds We could go by the DRU Factor and call them 250 class...500 class and 1000 class (or 800 class or 400 class etc) Levels don't work because one salons level 3 is a 36,000watt Magic HP bed and the best bed in the store, and one salons level 3 is a 1999 Ergo 450 with old lamps but their level 6 is a UWE P90. And then , to make it worse...Some salons tell customers that HP beds have NO UVB...Some salons say HP won't burn you an some salons have 4 M.E.D. HP beds and the customers think they are all the same thing. Some salons call a Mattress HP bed a "bronzing bed" and other salons call a 232g with low b reflector lamps a "bronzing bed" ..both are correct yet it is totally confusing for customers Posting a Beds DRU factor would help lighter skinned people but a High DRU with low uvb will not get you as dark as a lower dru with higher uvb so it is still confusing between the skin types. So many salons have a level 5 that doesn't tan as well as their level 3 beds anyway..so we know the salons are all F'ed up too when it comes to understanding beds. Arrrrggg

So what's your point?
![]() Actually you are very correct. I have no where near the years in the industry as you and several others and I get p!$$@& at my competitors calling their 32 lamp/3 facial beds HP. Another of the reasons the whole industry needs a mulligan. |

In the EU the government and industry categorize beds as "type" 1,2,3,4... based on their UV output... I think Eeff W/mē "burning" rays or MED/hr - same thing.
Now they have a rule/limit of 0.3 Eeff W/mē which is a UV Index of 12..... and which translates to only 5.15 MED/hr CIE or about 6.9 MED/hr FDA. Very weak. So I guess they all be pansy type "1" now days. They don't care if it's LP or HP.... just how many W/mē on a 7.5 Solarmeter or spectralradiometer.

Can't even keep people from having the hot bulbs signs out, how do you expect to change what they call their beds.
Everyone knows the super dooper beds are the best.

LOL, Drew you are very correct. Apples to Apples or Apples to Oranges, It is a loosing battle when each salon calls them the same names but isn't really the correct apple or orange.
When one salon calles their 100 watt reflector a bronzing or hp bed then I lose out cause I really do have 160watt and HP beds..... That is why I hate the price shoppers on the phone. Dumbphuckers

I vote for Monster bed.
Really, I still get calls from salons that say I need lamps for my monster bed. ok, what is that? What you don't know? It's my monster bed, just above the mega bed & just below the Frankenstein bed. Ohhhh well that explains it!

I had a very tan, regular customer tell me she went to a salon in another area, and had to sign a waiver to get into a 9 min. bed for 7 min. for $26
and didn't see any results. That was their level 3 bed, which the girl told her tanned better than the level 5 bed. |

This is why the industry in in shambles. There are so many salons that have no idea what they are doing. I hate the customer that comes in and says salon a down the street just got bronzing bulbs. Unfortunately many kids work salons that have no idea what they are doing, zero training. many salons in my area let the customer set their own time(guess what, I will give myself full time). Full HP is full HP, not a few facials. I am just pissed at the industry as a whole. Also customers suck!!!! Just my 2 cents worth!!~!~!!!!!!!

In California..the Owners don't need to know anything...and training is OPTIONAL basically. Our Largest Salon chain, I Tan trains every employee competely wrong. (for instance telling them the Hybrid Hp/vhr beds are "50% tanning rays and 50% burning rays"....stupidumbasses

and salons telling customers they NEED to sometimes go back to the level 1 beds to get uvb.
STUPIDUMBASSES...your VHR beds have the SAME UVB as your base beds if you are running a legal salon. 4 M.E.D.'s in 12 mins on your VHR or 4 M.E.D.'s in 15 or 20 on your base beds. That is how the manufacturer comes up with the MAXIMUM SESSION TIME.....which is always 4 M.E.D.s max. ONLY IF ..you are running illegal will you have 6 or 8 meds on your base beds. The only exception would be if you purposely put in a gentle lower B vhr lamp in your vhr's. LOWER B than the bed came with!!!

Had a new customer come in a couple of weeks ago and signed up to tan with us for her wedding coming up in November. I asked about the groom and she said that he can't tan (Type 1). Said that he went with her to another salon (franchise) and they told him that he can go a full session in their "Super Extreme High Pressure Bed" because it is "Impossible" to burn in these beds. Guess what - He burnt to a crisp. Blistered, peeling, the works. I went on to ask her if he can get a tan outdoors even a slight one and she said no. I let her know that if he wants color, he has to have a custom spray done.
That is just 1 example of what I hear the other salons are telling the customers. For the most part, I find that it isn't that they are lying to the customers intentionally. I find that they don't understand many things, some of which are how their beds work and how a per son actually tans. These are the same places that are telling people that you can come in everyday to tan and that it is okay to do this. (They want the package to be used up quicker?) |
