Default Exploding 818 Lamp!

1995 Ultrabronz 818

I continue to have exploding lamps in the same cassette location over and over. I estimate about 1 in 20 startups. Lamp explodes on intitial startup. Blue filter glass intact. Voltage is around 400v running.

Voltage just too high or should I be looking at a component like a ignitor or cap since im dealing with just one location?

Thanks for any thoughts?

Joe

Could be the igniter, the ballast, or the capacitor. First I would do a visual inspection of the capacitors (silver canisters in the back right corner of the bed) and the ballasts (heavy brown transformers at the front of the unit). If you see any burnt wires or melted terminals that is a good place to start. You may also want to make sure all of the wires on your circuit breakers are tight.

If all of this looks good then go up top and check the wiring. It is not uncommon for wiring to get crispy or melt together on these older machines. IF that looks good then i would replace the igniter.

Hope This Helps
Steve

Make sure the wires are tight on all of the ballasts as well.

Bad ballast.

what do the lamps in the bed look like after running for a while? Are they "bloated" what does the electrode look like? Also where did the lamp "explode" from? the center of the lamp or the ends.. If at the ends it could be a problem with seals in the lamp pinch. Also what lamp? I have seen people get so low grade lamps or lamps rated at 135V (lamp V) instead of the 215V they need for the system
