Default Motivating Staff

Anyone out there relate? I am having trouble motivating my staff. I have tried contests, giveaways, money and still not a great response. The staff also gets great commissions on products. I do not know what to do to get their numbers even higher. Any suggestions????

Take their commission away until they start selling. OR only give them commission if they sell a certain amount each month. If my employees get less than $0.75 LPPA then they don't get anything. Less than $1.00 and they only get 3%.

Contest is great with a bonus/gift card attached to the goal. Give the card the day the contest ends for quick results. Nothing works better than being the example. "Always be Selling"
When you are there with them have them pick out a product and present to the next customer. You can give feedback to them on their approach or closing skills or both if needed. Goal is to get them comfortable with your products and be able to present the "Why" to your customers consistenly on each approach.

I've been thinking about buying Red Sox tickets for a contest here. Whoever has the best PPA will win them. Including me. But one of my employees wouldn't care and the other one is motivated to sell anyway. It would certainly motivate me though so I wouldn't have to give away sox tickets.

Sox tickets are a great idea. The one not interested could always give them away for Father's day or sell to a friend.

I would say that money and prizes motivate all my employees. That being said you might ask yourself are they "comfortable" selling? Maybe the need some more training time on lotions and upgrading a sale? Sales strategies and cofidence is key!

I think I'll do the sox tickets and let you all know how that goes. I guess just the best PPA will win....jeez hopefully I'll win them or I'll be sad.

I would like to know how to motivate my employees also. They already get a generous amount of commission percentage and free tans based on their sales of products.

I have 3 employees who have so many free tans they could tan until Jesus comes and never use them all!

I have thought about offering a cash incentive. Everyone needs money.

How do you figure up PPA?

If they aren't motivated to sell (which is their job) then i'd get rid of them and find someone that really needed a job. If a paycheck and getting paid, isn't enough motivation....then they shouldn't be working...cuz they don't need the money.

Motivation that keeps employees working....is them keeping their job.

Here's a goal for you employees......start selling, or you're fired.

What JustTans said. Mix things up. Exployees at salons, or anywhere in general, get stagnant. Too many promotions/contests and you are just giving out money for no reason. Watch your employees #'s, track their sales/commissions and see what motivates each one. There may not be a one size fits all motivation tool.

Get off of the chair, put the cell phone away, spit out the gum, greet the customers. If there are no customers then go clean a room, every day clean a new room top to bottom behind the beds and everything. Pick up the used lotion packets, underwear, tampons, dust and vacuum.

When you are done with that then when the customer comes in don't ask what they want, tell them what they need. Fill my register to capacity every day. If you cannot do that then I have a stack of applicants right here {fanning under nose} ready to take your position tomorrow to do that very thing.

If the customer is pale it's time for a sale. If it's time to lean then it's time to clean.

Get to work or you're fired!

are their sales great now? whats their lotion PPA? there comes a time in a salon owners time of ownership that they actualy get some top notch sales people that realy work it to the max, and then the salon owner gets comfortable with the sales and expects more. Do you feel your staff already sell great? Is it possible to get there "numbers even higher?" If your staff all walked out today, do you think you could easily replace them with others of equal or better sales skills? All things to consider.

Sometimes change is good, exciting and motivational to both employee's and customers. When people become stagnet, something new usualy gets them moving again.. New lotions, change up some of the slower moving products for something new. Does your staff set themselves daily sales goals? this realy helps them. My staff will write down how many bottles of lotion, tanning packages, swimsuits, they plan to sell on their shift and this usualy reflects what the daily sales goal will be. When they do this, they almost always reach their goals or much better, when they don't write their goals, then they kinda just run blind and don't realy focus their energy in one area.

make your staff pick a feature product each day/week, whatever works for you, sample out a bit into a glass (shot glass, martini, whatever) for customers to smell and feel. have the staff know this product inside and out and tell every single customer who walks through the door, about the product. As I've said before, if you tell everyone, several will buy, if you tell some, few will buy if you tell none, no one will buy, maybe one person who likes the packaging. lol so when they feature this product, make sure they tell everyone!

We have five salons, the top 3 between all 5 salons each month get 10% commission on the lotion they sold. When they have to compete for money that they all want it usually motivates them to sale more!
