I can't buy hair products from my tanning distributor, why should hair salons get to buy tanning products from the beauty supplier? If it was only sold through tanning distributors, then not every jo blow with any kind of hair, nail, makup, ticket could buy it at cost.

There is no issue with hair salons that have tanning beds, buying lotions, there is an issue with people that have no tanning bed being able to buy lotions at my cost to use in my salon, and buy it for all their friends also.

I also think Supre sucks. Never liked the dried on chalky feel left from the lotions after my tan. yuck.

Kind of off topic, however as a tanning salon business owner you can get a membership at beauty supply. You don't need to have an aesthetic license. The only indoor tanning lotions I've seen at my local Cosmoprof are Body Drench and some Hempz moisturizers from Supre.

Now, if Supre sold ONLY to tanning supply stores, then you would have to have a tanning bed in order to order your lotions.
The diversion issue is not about control. Consider:

What if the hair salon buys a bed, gets with a tanning lotion supplier, then sells their bed. They can still buy lotion from the tanning lotion supplier. Control lost.

The diversion issue is 100% about philosophy. About the lotion manufacturers making a pledge to only sell to qualified distributers.

To me, as I've explained, many hair salons qualify as small tanning salons thus makes sense to service them if you're a beauty supply shop. Anyway we're starting to go in circles a bit here..

Jeff, in canada, the beauty supply stores sell it, not just to hair salons with tanning beds, but to every jo blow who has any kind of estetic ticket, they don't even have to have a shop! or work for anyone! YET, us tanning salon owners are ONLY allowed to buy the tanning lotions, but not allowed to buy the other stuff sold in the beauty stores. How many of my clients ive seen buying supre at the beauty stores for themselves and friends, and then infront of everyone in my salon, say im ripping them off in price, as they get the lotions at my cost.
And despite the fact that I think Greg is dead WRONG about criticizing manufacturers for selling to beauty supplies and not doing anything about internet sales (because they're helpless and he knows that - or ought to know that), I think Greg's business model provides one potential solution.. Another potential solution is to lower prices.. and yet another, change lines to someone who does a better job at keeping it out of the hands of the beauty supply stores..

Like I said in another thread guys... 100-200% markup will attract competition.. you can't just disregard the realities of a free market economy just because it hurts your own bottom line..

If one looks past their own nose on this issue you'll see what I'm saying makes perfect sense.. otherwise that $1000 refridgerator you bought would have cost you $3000... and that $2000 TV would be $5000... the reason they're not is because of intense competition and I'm sorry but our tanning salons don't get a free pass on that..

My fingers are crossed that DC is coming out with a men's line. Then I can say - bye-bye to Supre's Hammer and the two others I carry.
Hempz in in a ton of tan extenders and moisturizers. Can always find a new one that isn't Supre for customers.

**Most important - Sell what you use. If you won't use a lotion because the smell, turns you orange, doesn't live up to the label. Don't order or stock in your store because it is cheap. Customers see right through this on the first tan. You will lose credibility with the staff and clientel.

The "Big 4" of course.
Designer Skin
Cal Tan
Swedish Beauty
Australian Gold

Since I became a Premiere Salon last year, my lotion sales are up 28%! And, I'll be getting a check back for co-op advertising. Best decision I've made.

I do miss the Fiesta Sun line, but that's the only one.

Let me say that in beauty supply stores around here, ANYONE can buy products. They just don't get a discount without a license. I can seen MANY clients come in who purchase lotions for $15-$20 from a beauty supply store!

Now back to the topic...
my top 3 (and only 3) are...
Devoted Creations
Synergy (Filthy Rich & Cupids Spell)
Designer Skin(which I don't prefer, but lots of customers ask for it)

For those of you who carry Fiji...which ones do you carry? I've not tried all of them, but the ones I have tried I wasn't too fond of!

Last year, I carried Fiji. Savage did very well with our teens and male clients. Nano was our best selling Fiji product.

To be quite honest, I don't like Fiji bronzers. I could tolerate the smell of Nano, although it was a harsh ATO. But, most of the other bronzers reallllllly had a horrible DHA smell afterward, and they streaked really easily. Momentum smelled great in the bottle, but after tanning it was awful.

I have a hard time selling products that I personally wouldn't use. And, I wouldn't use those because I didn't like the smell later.

JeffK, WTF? Where I am at the beauty supply houses have Supre, which means everyone with a beauty license, or their friend who uses their license can go and buy Supre whether their salon has a tanning bed or not. Give Greg a break, he does more to help salons than anyone I know. I am a bit biased, because Greg is a friend. However, I will tell you he has helped my salons over the years in mega amounts. If you have private label and don't sell it on the internet, it will not end up on the internet cheaper than what you sell it for. I have had clients tell me that they have tried to buy our private label on line but can't find it. Yea, no shit!

[quote=JeffK;274044]What would you have Supre do, Greg? Try to shut down eBay listings?

It is simple...

Supre assigns every salon customer a number then require every distributor selling the products to report that number vs the number of beds they have vs the products they purchased.

That way you know who are diverting products.

PS you verify bed counts for each salon....Most major brands are in the salon training them.

If they are selling 20 cases of lotion per week per bed then maybe they are selling on the internet!

It is simple... know your customers

That is how you stop diversion.

Why do I feel like I just got fed something from the GSK Resources cookie-cutter?? How many times have you babbled about this "system" when asked about diversion?

Unless all the manufacturers implement it AND share their sales info with one another then this parody of an anti-diversion system cannot possibly work...

System defeated in under 30 seconds of thought.

Thank you. Drive through.

By the way, anyone who's had Supre, or GSK Resources, show up in their salon to count their beds -- please say so.

About how many of each do you sell? like how many bronzers, accelerators, tingles? it seems like we tend to sell more of certain ones so I think i want to only sell a couple of each and get rid of the others. I just not sure what is a good amount of each to sell

So i have 4 beds in one of my salons but i order $1000 in lotions twice a week. That would flag me as an internet seller....or maybe i just make good sales and good at what i do.
