This is an amprobe. It clamps around individual wires without any physical connection and reads the amount of current that is passing through the wire. It uses magnetic flux around the wire. It is essentially a single turn winding transformer. The wire is the primary side and the meter is the secondary side.

Find a freind who is an electrician, or very constuction savvy, have him check it out. I am very experienced in construction, but I would not amp probe a panel, but a very good friend owns an elect. contracting company, so I call him over and then buy a couple of beers at the bar nextdoor.

If my panel on the out side was locked and I thought I had my main breaker in it. I would immed. clip off the lock and replace with my own.

If some one was in doing a repair, and somehow popped your main, your FUBAR, closed till you find the problem. All tanning salon owners should go into thier back room and investigate, make sure everything is labled correctly. It would make guys like Brian much happier.

Actually, it would make your customers happy when I don't snap their bed off looking for the correct unmarked breaker.

There should be an in room disconnect though.

Are the breakers in the room supposed to add up to the same amount of amps that is on the main breaker?

It doesn't work that way. You can add that up and that is what will be needed to run everything you have now full tilt without the main tripping but you should just check the main breaker.

Brian, when using one of these...to see the current draw of a particular unit, while the unit is running is when you use this eh? I have one, but have never had the need to use it.
