Default $2 million TV and print advertising campaign 'to dispel tanning myths'

Graphic ads 'to dispel tanning myths'

Posted 7 hours 6 minutes ago

A Cancer Institute study has revealed a low level of knowledge in New South Wales about the dangers of sunburn and ultra-violet radiation, with many people still tanning frequently or using solariums.

The State Government is launching a $2 million TV and print advertising campaign to help educate the community about the links between tanning and skin cancer.

The state Minister assisting the Health Minister, Verity Firth, says the graphic campaign will hopefully dispel the pro-tanning attitude she says many people have.

"We're trying to really make sure people really understand just how dangerous tanning can be, whether it's in the sun or in a solarium," she said.

"The advertisement actually shows how sun exposure damages a skin cell even before you begin to burn and how that damaged skin cell can turn into cancer."

Ms Firth says many Australians are too complacent about their skin care.

"What we're saying to people is 'Remember slip, slop, slap - don't forget a whole lot of these lessons,'" she said.

"A lot of Australians are people with European skin living in one of the hottest countries in the world with the most ultraviolet radiation in the world and they're not taking it seriously."
