Default Fire Suppression System

Do tanning salons need a fire suppression system? I'm assuming that would be a sprinkler system. I was talking about adding electrical and HVAC service to a space and this topic was brought up. Other than following code, hallway widths etc, is there anything else I need to do? I don't think I've seen sprinkler systems in salons. For sure that would cause a larger problem if that was to go off.

Also, for those of you without a drop ceiling, do you have any "material" sprayed onto your ceilings for some purpose? Can't you just leave the metal ceiling exposed?

Code, in our area, requires that you have 1 sprinkler every so many feet. If you have an open ceiling you can leave the sprinklers facing up to the ceiling, if you have a drop ceiling, you have to have them turned so they are pointing down and they have to be exposed through the drop ceiling. My entire ceiling is open, we painted it a dark brown coco color so it isn't so noticable but we also painted all of the HVAC ducting and everything else that we could to help it blend. We don't have anything else "sprayed"on the ceiling either.

Local codes may vary around the country pertaining to fire suppression (sprinkler) systems.

Best to start with your local building dept for questions.
