Default Static IP

If I am going to use Helios in my salon, is it worth getting a static IP address from my DSL internet provider? (Verizon)

Thanks!

Static IP addresses have many other uses.. if you always know what your IP will be you can do things like connect in and view what the computer is doing at that moment, or even take control of the computer from anywhere in the world...

(see TightVNC or GoToMyPC)

You can probably even get a static IP address for no cost (I think) at dyndns.org.. so before Verizon charges you alot, check them out.. I haven't used them in a few years but last time I did, there was no cost..

You do not need a static IP, dynamic dns is a tool that basically updates itself everytime your IP changes so you can access it. I can't remember, but I think verizon's IP pool is pretty static as far as you will keep the same IP for a very long time, especially if you leave your computer on. I'm on comcast at my house, and adelphia at the salon and they aren't static, but the IP has only changed for me 3 times in 8 years. 2 of the times were when the companies changed.

You may, or may not, need a static IP.. it depends on what you want to do.. but a static IP address does add capabilities in terms of connectivity and control.. I managed two of my offices from 1000 miles away for 2 years using this sort of setup..

dyndns.org simulates a static IP, so before you go paying Verizon for one - you might want to check them out.. that was the purpose of my response..

Good luck.

I don`t think I would not want a static IP with backoffice. Everytime it changes you have to change it too. If not you will not be able to use it. Now if you will not be using backoffice from home, etc and the only time you will be pulling reports is at your salons then maybe not.
