| Rookie | Hi! My name is Dan and im 17 (high school senior). Lately ive been thinking about my future, trying to plan things out in my head, and thinking about college and what i want to do as far as my career goes. About 3 months ago, i started to go tanning at a local salon. Being a first time indoor tanner at that time, i new basically nothing about the industry or how it worked. Lately (in the last 2 months or so) ive been studying the industry, trying to learn the up's and down's about owning a solon. ffice ffice" />As things stand now, my mind is set on starting my own salon. The problem is, i have no idea how to approach something like this, since im only a high school senior. Im wondering if i should go to college and possibly take some small business classes but im not really sure how to think about this, being only a teen. Any advise i get i would really think about and take in to consideration. What should i do now as a high school senior? I have no idea where to start but i know i want to open a salon someday. |

You will need both an education and cash to start your own business, whatever it is. __________________ Alan"America is too great for small dreams" - Ronald Reagan |

Good Luck |

I have to tell you, I wish I would have been as smart as you when I was your age! think it is great that you want to start your own business, and smart! Please listen to me really closely, work at a salon..get to know the business. Read a ton of business books and learn as much as you can in your off time.. I would like for you to read every marketing book and advertising book. If you can take a basic accounting course, or read basics of accounting reports it will help.. If you plan on working a ton of hours at your salon then get a ton of books on selling and closing..and try to get books on "customer focus selling"..you have a lot to do, and you need to start now! I would not do anything for 2 years, lets just get it in your head that you are going to work at a salon and read all of the books above...and get your financial house in order! \ Stay on the tanning sites and continue to ask questions and get a ton of knowledge from all of the great tanning salon owners on this site! |

I agree with everyone about working in a salon. I do recommend college, I was 38 when I finally finished my BBA. I believe just experiencing college is a great life lesson. you might also check out the small business administrations website. They have all kinds of information. Another idea would be to take the Meyers-Briggs career assessment. It will give you career suggestions that match your likes/dislikes, strengths/weaknesses. Of course it is only a guideline. You can take one at any college, i am not sure about high schools. Congratulations on making it so far. I hope you enjoy your last year, don't forget to have some fun. Set your goal, and map out a life plan. |

You cannot accomplish anything in life or business without discipline and confidence. I now (typo, I hope) you don't know what to do, or where to start. If you want learn to get, first learn to give. Give of yourself first, then you will receive. Get some college while you're in the corps, kickin King Kongs azimuth every day! Then attack your degree, and your life, when your contract expires. But who knows, you might like the way it makes you feel. Good Luck, young man. - The Belvedere. "Semper FI, and AAHROOOOHGAH!!!" |
