| Prosecutor's office files charge against McCormick employee By Mike Westervelt Publication Date: 04/11/07 City Editor Print View A Lafayette man is accused of placing a video camera inside a tanning booth at McCormick Place Apartments. The Tippecanoe County Prosecutor filed one felony count of voyeurism against 30-year-old Jody Harvey Monday. Harvey was an employee at the apartment complex, 2110 McCormick Road, and is suspected of using a hidden camera in the room, possibly for as long as three months. "I think about it every day," said Nicole Markley, a sophomore in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. "I still feel very violated, even in my own apartment." Markley said she used the tanning bed between three and four times per week during the suspected time frame. "It was one of those things you hear about in movies," she said. "It's very freaky; something that seemed like it was a private thing I was doing ... someone else saw and possibly others." Markley found out about the suspected invasion of privacy from two letters that were mailed to residents. The first went out on March 8. Barb Landis, community manager for McCormick Place, said three other employees were implicated in the alleged plot. They reportedly knew about the recordings and did not notify police or management. "As soon as this came to my attention, I called the police immediately and I terminated all the employees involved." Landis said a surveillance company has since swept the facilities for additional devices. The company found nothing and it is suspected that Harvey previously removed the camera. Landis said reports indicate one of the employees destroyed the tape or tapes. But resident Alicia Kelly, a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts, isn't convinced and is considering a lawsuit against Harvey. Kelly used the tanning bed about two to three times a week. "I just want to wait to see if more details arise," she said. Kelly said she has since stopped using the complex's tanning bed. "You see this on television but when it hits close to home, it's something you feel is a big issue. I just know that it's something that can happen to anyone, but it just happened (here)."
