Nevada Tanning Bill Fails In Assembly
A Nevada bill calling for the regulation of tanning establishments by the State Board of Cosmetology failed to pass in the
Nevada Legislature Tuesday.
AB 238, was introduced on March 2 with a deadline of having to move out of the Assembly to the Senate by April 24.
Requiring a two-thirds majority vote to win approval due to a stipulated fee increase, AB 238 fell two votes short of that on Monday. A second vote was scheduled for reconsideration in the Assembly on Tuesday but never occurred, rendering the bill dead through inaction.
Democrats said consumers should be informed about the health risks of tanning beds (specifically ultraviolet lights and chemical coatings placed on the beds), citing support from some in the tanning industry during hearings on the bill.
Republicans opposed the measure, saying it would create too much government regulation.
