Default Indoor tanning attacked again

Just saw this article on my MSN homepage. This time a Dr. Heike Mahler, U.C. Berkeley, says UV rays cause premature wrinkles, which I do not doubt, but then she goes on to say that tanning is "addictive" like alcohol, tobacco and so forth. This is a new one one me. That's like say shopping is addictive. Tanning is a behavior brought on my vanity, but an addiction. Shall we open a rehab center for tanners? Then Paris Hilton should be our first patient.s

Then Dr Mahler says, "we could at least try to prevent minors from having access to indoor tanning and post medical warnings about the hazards of indoor tanning.”

Finally Dr Mahler provides a list of things tanners should avoid, including, "Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds and sunlamps give off harmful UV rays that can contribute to long-term skin damage and skin cancer. They are not a safe tanning alternative."

Here's the link to the article:

I just wonder how much of an effect the skin cancer movement has had on tanning salons. I think the industry certanly must find ways to improve its image. Defending indoor tanning as a way to get your daily dose of Vitamin D is only going to take you so far.

Just saying.

I think it is irresponsible for doctor and media to promote the "addictability of tanning" Its absurd. And then to compare it to drugs, smoking, and alcohol addictions?!? Its grossly negligent, IMO.

However, they have been saying things like this for years. The media couldn't care less about whats bad or good for the general public. The only thing they care about is having a sensational story to run.

Ask for the doctors, you can get any quack to say anything you want...just grease their pockets right. Sad but true. The fact remains that large anti-tanning companies have lot of money and are excellent at stuffing lobbyist groups pockets with it in order to have these quacks say what they do.

Why do they have such a great effect on our industry when for year and years they have shun cigarettes and the addictability of them? Are they hurting...no. Probably because they actually are addictive and people buy them knowing the risks.

Anyway, if we want to combat that non-sense, the only way to do it is to have one large unified, well-funded lobbyist group of our own. (ITA isn't cutting it) JMO. If they want to treat us like cigs...might as well act like em.

Its all about money Leo. These people dont care whats true...or what is "best for the general public". Its not about that...its about who has the most dough and is willing to fork it over to better their profit margins by swaying public opinions.

pffft, then they will go lie by the pool at their country club while dad plays golf, like I did. UV addiction must run in the family because we all spent every single day outdoors as much as we possibly could... and I'm not wrinkled!

Quick, somebody!! Shut down the shore!! The kids are at risk for premature wrinkling!!!!

And what is the premature age for wrinkling? What age is it ok to wrinkle? Long term skin damage & cancer?

Quick somebody!! Shut down the sun!! We might be at risk!!
