| Tanning salon employee taped patrons, police say Most people feel comfortable undressing in only a couple of places outside the comfort of their homes. That's why it's illegal to capture people on video in places such as restrooms, dressing rooms and tanning beds. Imagine a 19-year-old Savannah woman's horror when she saw an arm holding a video camera as she disrobed at Endless Summer Tanning on Waters Avenue earlier this month. The woman told police a minute or so after she entered the tanning booth and got undressed that she saw a man's arm holding a video camera over a partial wall. According to a preliminary police report, only two people were inside the business during the June 13 incident - a woman, and an Asian man. When questioned just after the incident, store employee Ja Hoon Ku told police a suspicious man had just left his business and that the person who had departed might be the culprit. Police never found that alleged suspect, but they did find evidence that linked Ku to the intrusive video incident. Late Thursday morning, officers with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested Ku, 28, on charges that he invaded the privacy of two women at the midtown tanning salon. In the course of the investigation, police found evidence that Ku not only recorded the 19-year-old disrobing but that he also recorded another woman. Investigators said they feel confident there are only two victims, said SCMPD spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson. Ku was in jail Thursday night, awaiting a scheduled arraignment in Recorder's Court today. He is being charged with unlawful surveillance, a felony, and obstruction. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison on those charges. The victims' identities are being withheld by the Savannah Morning News because of the nature of the crime. Ku is an employee of the business, which has operated in the Midtown corridor under new ownership since May, according to a statement released by police. Source |
