| Overtanning is so serious here it's now an official disorder By LYNNE KELLEHER Sunday July 01 2007 Women in Ireland are now becoming so hooked on both sunbeds and fake tanning products that they are going under hypnosis to stop their obsessive behaviour. The Paul Goldin Clinic in Dublin has revealed it has had a major influx of patients this year seeking help to cure their tanning disorder. Katie-Jane Goldin, who is the clinical director and hypnotherapist, said that over-tanning is now classed as an official disorder in the clinic. "We've had so many people in with this problem this year that we've had to put it in a category of its own," she told the Sunday Independent. "It is a new phenomenon. Women are becoming addicted to both sunbeds and fake-tanning products," she added. The celebrity culture of looking toned and tanned in airbrushed magazine shoots is putting pressure on Irish women to look the same, Ms Golden explained. "People want to look dark all the time like celebrities - this year alone we've treated 25 women for being addicted to tanning. One girl I treated recently was 15 and her parents brought her in because she was going through so much fake tan. She looked orange. She was so obsessed with tanning that she didn't see what she looked like." Teenagers today are slathering themselves in fake tan before going out for the night - believing that they don't look pretty without it. "This girl said she had no confidence without the fake tan and she felt terrible without it. But her mother said it was staining all her clothes and her bed clothes and she looked dreadful. It was affecting her life." Teenagers tend to get addicted to fake tan but it appears that the tan-related addiction of older Irish women is different - they are getting addicted to sunbeds. "I had one woman here recently who used the sunbeds every second day," Ms Goldin commented. "She was very dark when she came but I would have said she was fair naturally. There was a history of skin cancer in her family but she couldn't stop herself. She felt she needed a tan to have confidence about herself. She wanted to look healthy but what she wasdoing was just totally unhealthy." Source |
