DayDreamer...

How long have you been in the industry?

With what you are saying...I find it hard to believe that people actually have children that are born healthy who live in extremely hot climates such as Phoenix and Las Vegas to name a few. And how do those people in in places that see sun 300 plus days a year do it...do they stay indoors for 9 months? Personally I just recommend to customers shorter than normal session times and really take your time getting in and out of the bed.

Sorry I'm being a smart a$$...It's hard enough when when customers have these uneducated opinions...but more difficult when one of our own says it. Heat is the only concern I have ever heard from any doctor, and for myself it's just the "getting in and out" of the bed that concerns me (being off balance and extra strain and so on).

You can make your own store policy's and have you own beliefs about the subject...good luck and always continue to educate yourself, employees and your customers

I guess I am in the minority.... I ENCOURAGE pregnant women to tan!

Please TAN for the health of your baby! I hate it when these young girls come in and say they cant tan. I then ask them if they asked thier doctor and they tell me no they just think it is bad.

There are several reports and one MAJOR report following children of tanning mothers. Nine years afterward the children of tanning mthers had greater bone density and increased immune function.

So I tan the preggers!

Nope, everyone can tan upon their choice. preggys get the heat issue advice and are encouraged to tan EARLy in the day before beds get hot.

For pregnant ladies i get them in first thing in the morning when the beds are cooler and not tooo hot for them. When I was pregnant I found heat to be the problem with me and thought I was going to pass out if I jump into a bed at the end of the day after the beds had been running hot. Bring the preg, ladies in the morning and they will be more comfortable.

If your salon cooling system is properly set up the heat will not be a problem at any point in the day.

That should be true Brian but damn I was hot all the time when i was pregnant even when pregnant in winter I was still hot. So that's why I pulled the pregnant ladies in early. from my own experience and they seemed to appreciate it. But everyone is different and all pregnancies are different.

DAMN!!!! You guys are rough even on a newbie! I am not saying this from industry knowledge. I am saying this from medical knowledge that I have not only been taught in classes, but from what I have read and had been told by my physicians while I was pregnant. Now obviously this is one of those you can't color your hair while pregnant things and have possibly been misinformed with out looking at the new research about this subject. I did not think my reply would offend so many people. I am not saying you are a bad mother if you tan. If you have been informed that it is ok to tan and no research is available to prove otherwise then you obviously do not feel that it is bad for your baby. (Now to the women who smoke and drink those are proven facts.) However in this case of the women not even producing a note from her doctor sounded like she was not actually told by her physician that is ok to tan and between that and the information I was given on the subject I assumed this women in the story was going against what her doctor instructed her to do and that is what I meant by women disreguarding what is best for their baby. So please accept my apologies to anyone who was offended. YES, I am a newbie and YES, that is true about needing to research, but that is why I am here. I am not an ignorant person who can not be

jmtan,
That is an absolutely beautiful baby. I am sorry that my reply came across the wrong way. I am not saying you are a bad mother for tanning. If I was given different information about being able to tan while I was pregnant, I would have tanned throughout my pregnancy as well. Now I know by your example that the baby can still turn out beautiful and healthy as ever with tanning and I wont have to quit tanning with my next baby. YEAH!!!!
Thank you all who were not so mean about this and were helpful with the insite that I needed. I appreciate people who can be understanding of a persons faults. Nobody is perfect.
I am new to all of this and my son is the main reason for it. I am changing careers (and no not anything to do with writing or spelling so give me a break!) Therefore I can not be expected to know everthing and yet again I say, that is why I am here, to be

My wife's doctor told her not to tan too. But I was at the appontment with her and called her out on her BASELESS AND UNKNOWLEDGABLE advise. Just because the lady is a doctor does not mean she knew what she was talking about. And just because someone taught students in classes that the UV light travels through your skin an cooks your baby does not mean they know their a$$ from a hole in the ground either.

But regarding my wife's doctor's recommendation, I asked her, "why?, are you saying that tanning is bad for the baby?" And unless she wanted to lie to me she had no choice but to answer, "No." After further coaxing, she finally admitted that she was just "against tanning".

As Dr. Mirkin often says, many doctors "learn" a lot of stuff in medical school that is wrong. And many doctors base their advise on urban legend myths rather than medical and/or photobiological reality. That is what is so offensive.

Smart Tan did the Doctor/Nurse/Priest/Personal Trainer posters.

Maybe they need a pregnant woman poster? School Teacher? Policewoman? Farmer? Rancher? Lawyer? Politician?
