Thumbs down Dermatologists Want $0.50 Per-Use Tanning Salon Tax to Support Sun Safety Education

Dermatologists Recommend $0.50 Per-Use Tanning Salon Fee to Support Sun Safety Education Programs

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--City, state and federal governments should recoup health care costs and establish sun safety education programs by collecting fees of $0.50 per-use of tanning salons according to a survey of the nation's leading dermatologists.

For the last 5 years, sun protective clothing manufacturer Coolibar has conducted a survey among the nation’s leading dermatologists to determine their recommendations on issues related to sun safety.

This year’s survey found that 74 percent of dermatologists support the establishment of a $0.50 per-use fee on tanning salon patrons.

"Doctors clearly recognize the impact that tanning salons have on public health,” said John Barrow, founder and president of Coolibar. "This survey shows that there is strong support for a reasonable use-based fee to help educate young children, teenagers and the general population on the risks of overexposure to UV radiation. The country's experience—like with per pack user fees on cigarettes—shows that funding education is necessary to improve public health."

The Coolibar survey, completed by 1,020 dermatologists, was conducted at the 2007 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Statistics on tanning salons from the American Academy of Dermatology:
  • The indoor tanning salon industry exceeds $2 billion in annual revenue
  • More than 1 million people per year go to an indoor tanning salon
  • Only 21 states have laws in place regulating tanning salon practices

Dermaterrorists now want indoor tanning salons taxed an additional $180 Million / year.

They will want to be given the tax money so they can run more ads aimed at putting us out of business. That will pay for a nice anti-tanning salon ad campaign.

With the Democrats in charge, it could happen.

Bastards.

(I thought the statistics were that a million people a day visit a tanning salon and that the industry does $5 Billion a year.)

Perhaps we should propose a new tax for their industry to promote natural Vitamin D requirements?

Proposals have been discussed for an industry group to establish a 50 cent "tax" on bottles of lotions and/or lamps and use the money for a positive national ad campaign.

It's much more likely that the Dermaterrorist's Tax will happen before the indoor tanning industry can get organized behind a positive campaign.

Herding cats....

A clothing company asked doctors if they'd like some free money, and wow big shock-a-roo, they said yes.

If Designer Skin asked TSOs if they'd like a nickel for every bottle of Jergens sold, do you think we'd say no???
