| New solarium laws ban pale tanners Article from: AAP March 14, 2008 12:29pm TOUGH new laws controlling solariums come into force in South Australia today, including bans on their use by children. Solarium operators also will be forced to turn away people with fair skin and display health warnings detailing the risk of skin cancer. There will be limits on the frequency and duration of tanning sessions, with the minimum age for clients raised from 15 to 18. Environment Minister Gail Gago said inspectors would attend tanning salons to remind operators of the new laws, which attract maximum penalties of a $50,000 fine or a five-year jail term. Ms Gago said the new laws were prompted by concerns about the industry's voluntary code of conduct. "Our government is concerned that lives are being put at risk in South Australia by irresponsible practices surrounding the use of solariums," she said. "I wasn't satisfied that there was adequate compliance with the national voluntary code of conduct, so we've not only enshrined those requirements in law, but gone further. "These new laws are about ensuring that we have a responsible, well-informed industry, that staff are properly trained and their clients receive correct health care advice and are fully aware of the dangers of exposing their skins to high UV levels." The solarium industry in SA has grown rapidly in recent years, with 150 tanning salons now operating across the state as well as tanning beds in some fitness centres and beauty salons. South Australia's new laws on solariums will be reviewed in 12 months. Victoria became the first state to introduce laws regulating the solarium industry last month, following the death of Melbourne woman Clare Oliver from melanoma in September. Ms Oliver had been a regular user of sun tanning beds before she was diagnosed with skin cancer and spent her dying days raising awareness about the dangers of tanning. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...005961,00.html

That's is the job that the ITA does best. Everyone in the industry should be a member of the ITA. No exceptions or exemptions.
