Seniors risk cancer via tanning booths

Published: March 11, 2008 at 12:30 AM

PHILADELPHIA , March 11 (UPI) -- One out of 10 Grandmas and grandpas are getting a tan at a tanning salon and risking cancer, a U.S. study shows.

An analysis of a National Health Interview Survey of 29,394 people revealed that while 20 percent of 18- to 39-year-olds visited tanning beds, 10 percent of those between the ages of 50 to 64 years used a tanning bed and 8 percent of those over age 65 did.

"Our results are concerning, especially given the increasing rates of skin cancer, including the deadliest form -- melanoma," study researcher Carolyn Heckman of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia said in a statement.

"Ninety percent of all skin cancers are thought to be associated with ultraviolet radiation, which is emitted during indoor tanning. There is a myth that indoor tanning is safer than sunbathing, but this is not the case."

Heckman said the researchers were surprised by how many older adults visit tanning facilities.

The findings were published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Yes - better those older adults sit in their homes and suffer from Vit D deficiencies so they can die from much more common cancers like Colon and Breast!

Oh - and the older Americans that flock to the "snowbird" communities and hang out on the beaches all day are fine. Just worried about those hitting the tanning salons!

What a crock - you have to wonder if they really KNOW how stupid they sound when they write these articles?

Not sure where they get their numbers. my DB is 1250 as of today.

I have 2 active tanners over 65.

One tans because her Dermo's bed costs to much much to clear up her issues. So her's is medical related.

The other tans once or maybe 2 times a week because he's smart

I find their over 50 number quite accurate, my over 50 tanners make up 10.50% of my tanners over the last 12 months. The over 65 however was only 3%. One of my older customers came in yesterday after golfing, he only tans in my Matrix and is 74.
