MISHAWAKA — Firefighters were called to a tanning salon in Mishawaka Thursday morning after a tanning bed started on fire while a woman was using it.

It happened at the Tiki Tan in the Toscana Park shopping center on Gumwood just north of S.R. 23.

The fire started in a high-pressure tanning bed. The woman who was using the bed at the time says she was a little shook up but she can laugh about it now.

“I had my goggles on, of course my eyes were closed and I smelled fire," Desi'ree Himes told WSBT News. "I tried to get the fire extinguisher in there and we were trying to get it out and stuff and by then trying to get dressed on top of that!”

The fire marshal is trying to determine the cause of the fire. The owner told WSBT News it appears the fire may have been caused by a short in the electrical cabinet located inside the bed.

Nothing else was damaged and no one was hurt.

The store and several surrounding businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

Owner says tanning salon safe, despite fire

MISHAWAKA — A fire at a tanning salon left one woman a little shaken, but not harmed. It happened Thursday morning at the Tiki Tan in Mishawaka. Desiree Himes was in a standing tanning bed when the fire started in the cabinet behind her.

MultimediaRelated Content"I had my goggles on, of course my eyes were closed and I smelled fire," Himes told WSBT News. "I tried to get the fire extinguisher in there and we were trying to get it out and stuff and by then trying to get dressed on top of that!”

She managed to get out with the help of employees.

“Everything the employees did was exceptionally correct,” said Rick DiBari, owner of the salon. “The fire department complemented them on their responsiveness and how they did it.”
DiBari told WSBT News he’s never had a problem with the model of bed that burned. He also said he never any complaints filed against his salon in South Bend or the one he owns in Elkhart. He said the salon was inspected before it opened.

But WSBT News has found the rules have changed.

Salons no longer have to be inspected before they open and state regulators told WSBT News the General Assembly went even further.

"Last year, the legislature repealed the law in which cosmetology salons, barbershops had to be inspected during their license tenure, in other words, before they renewed their license,” said Bill Nave, Director of Compliance and Investigation for the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.

The state can do random inspections, and does investigate complaints. Nave told WSBT News a state inspector will look into what happened at Tiki Tan. The state fire marshal is also looking into the cause of the fire.

That can't be good for business.

Is that Dr. Muller pictured the actual one that caught on fire?

They show a Saturn HP stand up as the bed on the company's website. The Video on the link above she says it was a stand up HP unit.

It was a Saturn Standup.

Wow, that fuquer was cookin'.

No idea why they included the Sungate pic in the story. Not like it matters now that they are out of biz. Notice the hand print on the bottom acrylic.

All they had to do was turn the power off. Now that unit is totally fuqued. The dry chemical will eat it alive.

Al, did they call you on this? What do you think?

That's what I thought...just go flip the breaker off. Electrical fires are fuelled buy electricity...no electricity, no fire...right?

I think you are right Sandi.

And they probably just showed the bed in there too to make people scared of going in both stand ups and lay downs. This fire just proves that tanning is evil. DUH

It looks like the contactor had a loose connection or a capacitor blew up all over the components.

I have seen beds cook like this before and in most cases they are completely repairable untill some yahoos go in and douche it down with the fire extinguisher. The powder is corrosive and will eat everything over time. This unit is now ready for the dumpster.

They could have just turned the power off and babysat it untill the flame chilled out. The component plastics and wire insulation is flame retartdant and will not hold a flame once the electric stops heating up the conductors.

Now they had to close down in busy season, get that corrosive powder everywhere and get the media involved, which is the worst spin of it all and send a brother no less to investigate the "tanning salon".

"Man, these muthas ah all crazy all up in this mutha phucka right heeyah all tannin' and $h!t. Dey gunna get theyas all right."

A word for tanning salon owners, Halon fire extinguishers. There is no powder, just a suffocating blast of halon gas. No mess, no residue, no disposal of a potentially repairable forty thousand dollar unit.

Ohhh thanks! Mine's expired. Can you use it only on electrical fires though?

You can use it on any fire but they are more expensive but don't ruin sensitive components and leave no residue behind so there is no cleanup. The regular ones are fine for the general fires but if you have something that you may want to salvage then it is the way to go.

The powdered and halon are both ABC.

Great info right there. I'll be checking into one of these next week. You never know when something like this will happen. Believe me, I know first hand. We had a capacitor blow in one of our VHR's and caught fire. I used a chemical extinguisher as it's all we had. Luckily I was told to get it cleaned ASAP and we were able to salvage everything.

Would have made it a whole lot easier with this type of extinguisher.
