The ITA has set up an automated email to oppose the proposed new 6% Maryland Tax on Tanning. There are 2 pre-formated letters: one for clients and one for salon owners.

Help Defeat the Maryland Tan Tax

These grassroot email campaigns are very effective. A copy of the email goes to the delegates and senator in your district and the governor. If your salon and home are in different districts, send email letters from both districts for wider coverage. Everyone is encouraged to personalize your email.

After you send the email, look for a confirmation email. It could go into your "spam" folder. The email must get a confirmation response before the email is sent on to the delegates. No confirmation = No email delivery!

Don't forget, the hearing on HB-250 is next week, March 12th @ 1pm in the HoD Ways and Means Committee.

Tax would help reduce skin cancer

A recent letter to the editor (“No more services need to be taxed,” March 5 Community Times) completely misses the point of HB 250, which makes use of tanning salons subject to the sales tax.

General policy is that essential items, like food and medicine, should not be taxed. However, tanning is a purely cosmetic service, and one that comes with significant health risks. Just type “skin cancer tanning” into any Internet search engine, and you will quickly see that skin tanning in salons markedly increases melanoma, squamous cell, and basal cell skin cancers.

Just as the cigarette tax has helped reduce smoking, having tanning salons cost just a bit more might help reduce skin cancer rates. This is especially true for young people who are at greater risk and who frequent these salons.

It is important to make distinctions in tax policy and not blindly be for or against all taxes without regard to other important public policy considerations.

Del. Morhaim is the sponsor of HB-250. At the HoD Ways and Means Committee hearing today, Morhaim stressed the bill's intent to harm indoor tanning salon businesses.
