LAWS introduced after lobbying by skin cancer victim and anti-solarium campaigner Clare Oliver have forced 128 tanning operations to close.
Oliver died last year from melanoma, aged 26, and used her final days to campaign against solariums and tanning salons, using her own tragic case as an example of their dangers.

Legislation banning children under 15, requiring teens aged 16 or 17 to have parental permission and making warnings mandatory came into force on February 1.

State health minister Daniel Andrews announced today the number of tanning beds in Victoria has fallen by almost 200 - or 20 per cent - since the legislation came into force.

More than 120 businesses offering tanning facilities have closed, a drop of 30 per cent.

Mr Andrews' spokesman Jason Frenkel said the results were pleasing, and proved the legislation worked.

"Everyone remembers Claire Oliver's brave battle with melanoma, and the passionate job she did in her final days of bringing this issue to the public and the Government's attention," Mr Frenkel said.

"These laws are a part of that legacy. We're hopeful that they will save lives.

"Solariums emit unltraviolet rays up to five times stronger than the midday summer sun. Five Victorians are diagnosed with melanoma every day, and five die from it each week. We must change people's perceptions so they realise no tan is worth dying for. "

To date the government has audited 15 per cent of 308 tanning businesses to ensure they comply with the new legislation and are carrying the warnings they should.

Mr Frenkel said all salons would be visited by the end of the year, and denied the new laws had been responsible for small businesses closing down.

"No, I don't think we'd be looking at it that way, these measures are about making sure people using tanning beds do so in a safe manner," Mr Frenkel said.

amazing how they could pin point that it was a tanning bed that caused her death. Wow I need to go see those miracle doctors

I was living in Australia when she was living her last days. It was truly pathetic to watch her on TV. The problem was she herself stated that she had only visited a tanning salon a few times and that she loved going to the beach. And it didn't take into consideration any other factors such as what she ate, smoking, etc.

I just can't understand how in the world you can stop tanning salons yet you have an entire country that is addicted to going to the beach. I was there during their winter and you saw people laying out at the beach any day it was sunny. Crazy stuff.

Similar laws were passed in Scotland and the UK is moving in the same direction.

US passed the "Tan Act" which requires the FDA to go more negative on indoor tanning and report back to Congress on plans.

Dermaterrorists have not been more successful in the US, IMHO, because they have not found a photogenic Melanoma patient to martyr for their anti-tanning salon campaign.

US Derms see the success of the "Claire Oliver Strategy" and will roll it out as soon as they find a good media victim willing to die on camera for them. The script is written. Casting the part of the martyr is more difficult.

Who really wants to die for a cause that explicitly calls for the actor to declare that his untimely death will be a result of his own misbehavior, tanning under the control of Sociopathic Serial Killers operating UV Death Ray Machines?
