I do it all of the time... I went to a PBT a week or so ago and grilled them as a "perspective" seasoned tanner and after I tanned, as I was walking out one of my old clients was sitting in the waiting room waiting for the bed I just came out of. I just looked down and kept truckin'

I am sure she blew my cover (she's a bitch, glad she moved closer to them) and I will be flagged in all of their stores in my area... LOL

When she came out of our level 5 bed she was fried and I asked her , How much do they pay you at Beach Rays ? Her jaw dropped and said how did you no ! I told her she sent a red flag up when the first thing she asked was What kind of beds do you have? Then sdidnt ask the price and wanted our best bed! She was cool though and laughed about it after.

I went to a salon that had a bed outside under this gazebo thing., enclosed with a fence. I still need to go back and go in there and look at it up close.

I always shop other salons. I just go in and ask questions as a perspective tanner...sometimes I tan if they have a bed I have not tried.

I personally don't care what the competition is doing. I wouldn't waste $2.00 to try their beds. I'm also the best in town, but I don't glote. I don't have the income or the customers to make my chest stick out. I figure that if I'm slow, the other establishments are lucky to have more than tanning to help them. They gotta be hurtin'.

I go in them all. Sometimes just to check specials, one time I tanned so I could meter their stand up. I usually do the whole "Its my wifes birthday and I'm thinking about getting her a gift cert." The one time I tanned, the booth had 5 different types of lamps in it and 3 lamps were burned out, I took pictures with my camera phone. I hated giving them $12 but it made my day knowing what crap they were selling.

Competitor shopping is the best. I love going to other salons and asking questions, trying beds, spray, etc.

Some times, I even call the owner and give feedback. They appreciate it and have offered to credit my card for my tan. Not necessary. The laughs keep you going to the next salon.

It makes me feel better when I go to my comp and realize they have little chihuahuas running around barking while I'm tanning. And oh yea, they sell their lotions online and ship to people for half price. Can't remember when they shopped me (had to have been when it was owned by the old owner) because they stole our brochure word for word. At least I know I run a better more classy and clean salon.

I shopped a comp one time years ago. I went in as a prospect and the owner was there, didn't know me as I was the new girl in town. He bashed my salon like crazy to me. Said I had all old used equipment, etc. Boy was I livid but held my cool and didn't say anything to him. A few weeks later I had an issue with one of my new beds and since they were under warranty the manufacturer sent a service tech out. Well, guess who was the area service tech? They told me over the phone so I was prepared and you should have seen his face when he walked in and saw me. And then he had to work on my new bed. LOL it was absolutely priceless. I didn't have to say a word. Within a year he was out of business.
