Default Being Original - Is that possible in this industry?

How?

Why? Why not?

I think being the only "mom and pop" salon in the area gives us more of an advantage....me, the owner is here to great you the majority of the day....it is more personal than just hearding clients in and out of the tanning bed. We personally walk them to their rooms each time and talk with them....it allows us to know more about them and answer any questions they may have. also a good selling time because sometime people are afraid to ask questions with other's around. So I think it is possible.

To a point, we all are original.
From the name, decorating, bed selections, lotion line up, and addtional services all the way to the pricing.
Seldom do you walk in to a (excluding non-franchise/chains) salon and see an exact set up on anything.

I have heard of salons who offer a discount if you clean your own bed. - Scary! but Original.

Original in my eyes is doing something that NO other industry has done before.

We have 75% of our workforce hired under internships; does that count?

Better staff
Less payroll
Fresh ideas every semester
No unemployment issues
Easy recruiting

We had to develop a new training system, but it was worth it
Training budget is still under $300.00 per employee

Now thats a good idea, I hire college kids anyway. Might as well get them credit, and me cheap labor. I always paid interns when I had cell stores do you pay them?? what major's do you get the most of? Are they already tanners??

Mule may be right but I am about 3 hours drive from Le, so it is still original in his area.

I don't mind sharing that nugget

I pay them $7.00/hr + their portion of a store bonus

I hire mainly business majors, but I also have an accounting Major right now. Next semester I get a marketing major and IT intern.

We have an in-house bookkeeper through the intern program as well; however she is non-paid (just credit hours).

All of them so far have been tanners. Some do not live near us (except when on campus locally); some are locals doing interns over summer break.

Some schools we have worked with:

Purdue
IU
Ball State
Taylor

It still blows my mind and it wasn't a nail/hair salon. This is a tanning salon telling customers the "deal".

Love the internship idea - very original. I used the interns a lot when I was a District Manager in retail. They comprised my entire district visual team, some management positions, and sales. My payroll was the lowest in the company and out of CA...who knew.

That's a great idea!! I usually have college students who work for me. An intern would be great!! Who do you contact to get an intern through the college & how does it work in the salon when using an intern?

Well, I am grateful to live in a state with a good vision for improving the quality of students and the retention thereof (AKA, stop the Brain Drain). They have set up a 'One-Stop" connection through the local Chambers for a Graduate Retention program.

I would start with your local Chamber of Commerce and if no luck there move on to the universities and collages. Just go to the general help desk and tell them what you want to do and ask who you should contact.

Now... you do have to make it educational, not just wipin’ sweat and entering customers. Challenge them with serious projects and tasks and remember that GenY and Millenniums MUST stay busy or they lose focus. So create small and large projects for them.

And...
There is a distinct difference between a "collage Student" and an Intern.

Interns should be in their last year or 2 and be on track for success, and therefore looking for more than a pay check to party that weekend.

We only hire 3.0 or higher GPA and most are 3.5-4.0 GPA; they must also have a business degree track of some kind.
