Best marketing idea(s) of 2008

With 2008 pretty much winding down, what marketing ideas worked best for you in your salon?

What ideas did you hear worked best for others?

Three things that we did different this year:

1. Started a lotion buying club to keep customers buying from us. We have a lotion rewards card with 6 punches on it. Each bottle of lotion they buy with a retail value of $40 or more gets a punch plus a free session in the Orbit. When they've completed 6 punches they get a free bottle of lotion. We've almost completely stopped outside lotion from coming into the salon.

2. We adopted Dean's idea of unlimited first month and then 50% off each additional month when they purchase before their expiration date. This has cut down on paperwork and hassle on our end. People like it better than EFT's because they don't have to give information and I'm not dealing with declines.

3. We kept our Formostar packages high and added a bonus that when they buy their first package they can get a second same package for 50% off. We've had quite a number buy the 12 session package and then 2nd one so that's just under an $800 sale. That really helps the bottom line.

great ideas kathe! - do you have a picture of your punchcard? - do you have them made locally or order them?

I just make them up on matte business card stock from staples or office max. They are pretty simple. If you want I can email you the template. It's just on word.

We have a punch card for our single tans as well. After the 6th you get a free packet of lotion and after the 12th you get a free Orbit session.

for airbrush we do an unlimited month offer...30 days unlimited airbrush tanning for $50 ($50 in jason & $75 during busy season), customers eat it up!
Customers usualy only get 3 to 4 sessions out of it & it keeps the bills paid.

OOOO can I have it too Kathe? Do you use a special punch of it is just a normal one? I don't trust people, I think they would punch their own holes and think I was too stupid to check the computer.

Also, it is 6 bottles within a certain amount of time or just forever?

Meg I will email it to you in a bit. It doesn't matter how long it takes them to get the 6 lotion punches. And yes I have a special punch. It makes a star shape and I can always check the computer if I think someone is cheating.

Okay, so if they buy 6 bottles of your cheapest $40 lotions...when it's time to cash in on their free bottle of lotion and they ask for With Love as their freebie....would you give it to them?

Or do you have select lotions to choose from?

Well my lowest priced lotion over $40 is $46 and yes they can choose any lotion, that is part of the key to why this works. I was getting too many people bringing in lotions from the drug store, beauty supply, internet. I would rather have them buy 6 bottles from me and they get my best for free. And it's working. If you want you could put a limit on the amount for the free one. Another thing this does if someone is buying lotions that are less and they get a better one for free they get hooked on the better lotion. They see the results are better so the tendency is that after they will stick with a better lotion.

In summary
Have a lotion sale, buy any lotion at regular price and i'll refund you 100% FULL CREDIT to your account to used towards tanning (single sessions walk in prices)
