Default Scarring & Tanning

I've heard different advice on tanning and scarring. If someone has a surgical incission, or a cut that required stutures - when is it consider okay for them to tan?

Obiviously they should wait until the wound has closed. I've heard some say that UV will help with scarring, and also that UV will make the scar worse. Which is it?

It will make it worse. Cuts and/or bruises should be covered until they are completely healed.

UV will make them turn dark, I had plastic/reconstructive surgery years ago. They told me NO UV for 6 months, but they also said if I kept the area protected with a 50 spf and covered I could have uv exposure to other areas.

I did just that, I tanned daily and used heavy suncreens for a year and you can hardly tell I had surgery.

Of course I waited about 2 mos before I laid in a tanning bed.

i have scars on my neck in the front and back from surgerys due to breaking my neckthey are pinkish in color however when i tan its as if they disappear- no one even notices them. the one in the front i was real careful about and the ones from a halo that are on my forehead i was very worried about exposure i waited about 6mnth before i tanned due to the fact i was in the hospital but it actually made them less obvious and the airbrush makes them disapear which i love!

The ASR bed I bought from Prosun it supposed to help fade scars with the "red light therapy".

We'll see how it works soon.

agreeable gottatan. I had plastic surgery and have a "T" scar across my body...I didnt tan at first until it simply healed and my dr. said it was ok to tan afterwards, just put on some spf because they would tan much darker..and they did..but now that they are many years old , they dont get dark, they just stay the same...

Deja Vu is also supposed to help scars.

Miami Ink Tattoo Fade Shield with SPF 30 would also be a great sale to these people.

It would seem the wound would be fine after it has closed completely to tan. But as far appearance, how long is long enough to avoid making the scar look worse?
