Default Philips is getting out of tanning

Email to Philips customers October 6, 2008

Dear Sirs,

After over 25 years participating in the tanning business, we must inform you that Philips Lighting will exit this business at the end of 2008.
Philips Lighting will fulfil customer orders until the end of this year. We are pleased to inform you that from January 2009, a new company, part of the group of JW-Holding, Germany, will acquire the Philips tanning brand names “Cleo” and “BodyTone”. It will continue to supply, under these brand names, the existing Philips portfolio i.e. Advantage, Swift, Professional, etc. as well as the current range of stencil brands manufactured by Philips Lighting. These lamps will have the former Philips names, but will NOT be tanning lamps made by Philips.

The tanning market has been in decline for some years, leading to high over-capacity in this market. Philips is exiting this market for purely economic reasons.
This decision includes the production and sale of ALL TL low pressure fluorescent lamps, CFL-ni compact lamps and HPA discharge lamps. Sales of UV Starters, including S12 and S16 types, will continue through selected partners.

Philips Lighting will remain active in Medical lamps for Photo Therapy applications, as this area has a strategic fit with the core activities of Philips in Healthcare.

Your key account manager will contact you in the near future to discuss the exit plan in more detail and, importantly, the last order date to ensure delivery in 2008. It is our intention to fully support JW-Holding in this new venture to allow you, our customers, to continue successfully with the Philips sun-tanning name portfolio in the future. Under separate cover you will also receive information from JW-Holding in the next few days.

We would like to thank you for your continued business support and cooperation for so many years and we wish you every success with your business in the future.

With kind regards,

OEM Manager & Country Lighting Chairman
