Robert, I mean no disrespect, but if I had high powered connections like these, I believe that I would asked for some direct answers to the constant questions that are out there:

How do we fight?
Where do we start?
Who do we need to be in contact with?
What is our best approach?

After all, prominent lawyers in DC are exactly what is needed when salon owners are looking for insight and direction...

Law in DC is very specialized and very expensive. The right money hires the right lawyer and the right lawyer gets in the right door. The good new is the ITA has hired one of the top “FDA” law firms in Washington to help us develop a strategy and respond to the challenge.

The following are the immediate actions items in advance of the March 25 meeting:
  • Contact senior personnel within the FDA's Commissioner's Office and the Device Center (CDRH) to obtain a better understanding of the internal Agency dynamic and what the FDA may ask the Advisory Committee to address specifically during the meeting (e.g. performance standards, more restrictive labeling, etc.). The goal of these meetings is to obtain candid feedback on the FDA's current position regarding tanning lamps, its plan for the Advisory Committee meeting, and its long-term regulatory strategy for these devices.
  • Review and synthesize the scientific literature on the health impacts of tanning devices, as well as the critiques and related materials in order to have a full field-view on the underlying science to best position the ITA at the Advisory Committee meeting.
  • Prepare written comments (e.g. a White Paper) in advance of the Advisory Committee. This will include a comprehensive assessment and critique of the various scientific reports referenced by Rep. DeLauro (IARC/WHO). The White Paper will be positioned as a neutral and un-biased analysis of the literature and will ensure that the Advisory Committee is aware of the flaws of the cited reports. This will be a critical step in establishing the Administrative Record at the FDA and ensuring that any discussion regarding additional labeling or other regulatory controls (e.g. performance standards) be based on a scientific record. This piece will also be used in other forums, including conversations with CDRH personnel, the Hill, and OMB in the event the agency proceeds with a rulemaking.
  • Assist the ITA in its preparations for the Advisory Committee meeting, such as identifying potential speakers, attendees, etc. This will also include preparing both written and oral statements for the hearing.
  • Engage in follow-up to the Advisory Committee meeting with the FDA to assess appropriate next steps.

None taken! My other brother and cousin are very succesful lawyers as well and I still find myself paying a lot in legal fees each year.....figure that? My kids did get a private tour of the Supreme Court though.

OK Guys, I am reposting this. No more bickering, let's just try for results, and maybe some can talk on the phone like we used to do in the old days and sort out misconceptions and such quickly?? What do you think...

***
Dear friends,

Amen to the guys that are positive.

I used to say to my staff in all the companies I ever started, that they should not be afraid to make mistakes. If you make a mistake, we can probably fix it. Doing nothing or wavering is not an option. A sitting duck gets shot for sure, but do something or get out of the way.

Has the ITA made some sidesteps or misteps, OK, a new organization peppered by pellets has to keep moving. And it is.
So we should support what we have, voice our opinion by talking to the guys, learning and understanding.

Writing and ranting like a sour person accomplishes aboslutely nothing. Smart people know that. Getting to a general consensus will help us all, and again, no one is trying to black mail me or force me into gving thousands of dollars over the years. It is a choice.

It is for the best and the only way to accomplish we needs to be done.

One should THINK about what is best, and any business can and should afford $20/Mo. to work for and secure their own future.

Now if those 20 just made 3- 2or 3minute phone calls to salons a couple towns over (not the comp if it makes you uncomfortable)to try to convince those owners to join, and so on....
if only one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't listen to him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't listen to either of them.
And IF three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
joining the ITA and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in joining the ITA and
walking out? And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

About 6 years ago, a very attractive older woman dressed in a classy business suit walked into my salon. She identified herself as being from the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Businesses). She pulled out a 3-ring binder and walked me through all the lobbying efforts they do on behalf of small businesses; all the marketing materials they offer; a list of all the businesses in my area that had joined, and why it was in my best interest to join and pay the dues (a couple of hundred every year).

Well, she convinced me, and I joined on the spot.

That is the way to do it.

That's the way to do it! I think it has to be done in person. No one takes unsolicited sales calls anymore, anyway.
