| UV Foundation Applauds Vitamin D Research Results McLEAN, Va., Jan. 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Ultra Violet Light Research Foundation is heartened by results of several recent studies on the importance of Vitamin D for good health. Over the past three weeks, studies from the University of Auckland, New Zealand and the Moore Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego have continued to support the link between Vitamin D and positive health issues ranging from lung health and new asthma treatments to the prevention of cancers of the colon and breast. These studies showed that daily intake of 1,000 units of Vitamin D cuts the odds of getting colon cancer by about half, and the chances of breast and ovarian cancer by about one third. It is a well known fact that frequent, sensible exposure to ultraviolet light helps the body produce Vitamin D and that you cannot "overdose" on Vitamin D that is produced through UV exposure. "We are very pleased that these studies have proven again what we, at the UV Foundation have been saying -- that Vitamin D is an essential component in maintaining good health," said Jim Shepherd, President of the UV Foundation. Shepherd is concerned, however, that the medical community continues to promote the use of "Vitamin D supplements" as the preferred way to get the recommended doses of Vitamin D and overlooks the natural way; sun exposure. "To get 1000 units of Vitamin D, you would have to drink almost a gallon of vitamin D fortified milk every, single day and vitamin supplements are out of economic reach for many people. However, depending on where you live, 10-20 minutes of sunshine on your arms and legs is absolutely free, easily accessible, and has the added benefit of making you feel better almost instantly," remarked Shepherd. "Vitamin D from UV exposure is free and easy to get -- why pass up the simplest way to improve your odds of preventing cancer?" About the UV Foundation: Founded in 2004, the UV Foundation is dedicated to exploring the positive effects of UV lights and to increasing public awareness about those benefits.
