The Canadian Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute of Canada are hosting a North American UV, Vitamin D and Health Conference in Toronto on March 8, 2006. This event is being co-sponsored by the Institute of Cancer Research of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the American Cancer Society and the Canadian Dermatology Association.

Presentations will be focussing on the relationship between Vitamin D and health (cancer, bone health and other chronic diseases), sources of vitamin D (including nutrition, supplementation and UVR exposure), as well as the benefits and risks associated with unprotected UVR exposure.

Our legislative hearings on MD HB-1226 are the next day. It would be nice to break some positive news during hearing testimony.

How could it be positive when you look who the sponsors are?

That's no different than the national press corps looking for a positive about Cheney.

I know there is an attack on tanning planned for the conference. The Fabutan/Competition Board settlement will likely be discussed. There will be statements made that use the phrases "indoor tanning" and "Vitamin D" in the same sentence. Whether those statements read as pro-tanning or anti-tanning remains to be seen.

I have, perhaps unrealistic, hopes that we will have tanning industry advocates participating at the conference that can influence the conference report conclusions.

There will be a private workshop sponsored by the Canadian Cancer Society on March 9, 2006 that will "bring together experts in the areas of cancer, dermatology, nutrition, autoimmune diseases and bone health from Canada and the United States" to formulate a POA.

This meeting is by invitation only and so it is highly unlikely that anyone from the indoor tanning industry (or that has ties to the industry) will be invited. Thus, it is doubtful that the industry can "influence the conclusions" that will be reached at the workshop.
