| Warmer Temperatures Increasing Skin Cancer Risk The chair of a United Nations environment panel meeting in Alexandra says the warming of the planet could see a rise in skin cancer rates. More than 20 scientists from around the world have been working on a draft report into the environmental effects of ozone depletion and climate change. Jan van der Leun says while the pollution that causes ozone depletion is declining, the warming of the atmosphere will see a global thinning of the ozone layer. He says the current reduction in the size of the ozone hole over Antarctica is simply due to warmer temperatures in the area. And Dr van der Leun says a warmer climate will cause the ultraviolet rays to have a stronger effect, prompting a higher risk of skin cancer. Source

A fascinating (and well done) new Chinese study showed that the amount of terrestrial sunlight reaching the earth is significantly reduced in major metropolitan areas (as compared to the sunlight reaching the earth in rural areas). And the dermatologists want us to live in caves! |
