Default Me, my dermatologist and my melanoma in situ

Well today I had a chunk of shoulder cut out because two weeks ago they learned that the piece they'd previously removed had melanoma in situ. Anyway, the dermatologist was dumbfounded when I mentioned that we are opening a tanning salon.

She said
Quote:
UV radiation is SO bad.
I countered
Quote:
Well if that's the case, why is it that people who work outside and have more exposure to UV radiation show a lower incident rate of skin cancer AND why is it that skin cancer often appears on parts of the body that are not regularly exposed to the sun?
She said
Quote:
That's just not true.
Am I wrong? I thought that there are several studies that confirm what I told her....

Someone set me straight.

Not only are you NOT wrong but misleading SPF claims are EXACTLY the cause for the increase in UV related skin damage. Also pollution causes more skin cancer than UV exposure.

I tried to find on Google percent of melanoma on sun vs non-sun exposed areas... but no luck.

An update for those of you who have had trouble sleeping from all the worry. Two weeks ago they took a larger chunk out of me in the same place where they'd found the melanoma. Today the results came back clean. Whew!

The Mantra from the Bingo Hall -- B9, B9, B9.

Glad your results were on the positive side.
