Question Overheating cord/plug

I have had a 16 lamp home unit for the last 5 years. All of a sudden, the cord and plug of the tanning bed gets "very" warm to the point that by the time it shuts off after the 20 minutes, it's alarmingly warm. Does anyone know what would cause this to happen all of a sudden? I always unplug my bed after use, and use it every day. No problems before this. Thanks for your advice. I am still using it but get up to check on it at 10 minutes of use.

Well first of all, you shouldnt tan every day. And especially not 20 min.

But besides that, the unit is a crappy home unit and is cheaply made. Get an electrician to look at it and see what is up. MIght need to be rewired. Or you can invest in better unit or support your local tanning salon and help stimulate your local economy.

What kind of unit? Do you have a 230 volt outlet or does this plug into a standard 120 volt outlet?

Where do you plug this in? What size wire is the power cord? It will be embossed on the side of the cord.

Does the lamps have pins on the end or a plastic end with a spring loaded lampholder?

Cool Re: Overheating cord/plug

I don't have it plugged into an extension cord, I am smarter than that. It is plugged into the wall in the approperate wall plug. Thanks.

How about answering my questions instead of getting offended. You will get the answers that you are looking for that way. ...and that was a legitemate question to see if you are overloading the cord since you have been very vague about what the unit is and how it is set up.

Sorry, it just seemed like you guys didn't think I knew what I was doing! Sorry. It just seems funny that this cord is getting hot when I've had it for all these years with no problem. I have been tanning in it, checking the cord every 10 minutes or so. When 20 minutes are done, the cord is hot, but it still works. I just don't want to burn the house down. Please accept my apologies.

Ok, it's not plugged into an extension cord, just plugged into the wall only. Never thought about something going bad inside

Probably a loose connection either in the bed or the plug itself. loose connections cause heat.
Check wall outlet , check power cord, Take it apart if it is that kind of style, take apart the bed where the power cord goes into the bed and look at the connections and make sure they are all tight and no connections are burnt looking

Not angry, just tired of dim bulbs asking for help and then you can't get a straight answer out of them. Must be illiterate.

IF you check her other posts she was also asking about this same bed saying it was a "Friends" bed. No relevance....just sayin'
