Default metering!!!

I was told by a few people in the business not to over anylize meter readers, other than for bulb usage!!!

Is this true, will some bulbs, tan better than a bulb with higher reading, same % of uvb.

Beacause of a shipping problem I have a new(used) machine with lower reading bulbs in them, same uvb %, but customers have started requesting the new machine. The new(used) machine is beat up and has a different door.

please help me sleep easier!!!

Do you have a 7.0 meter or just the 5.0?

The 5.0 meter is good for lamp depreciation. The 7.0 is good for comparing units.

Lets say you have 2 - 20 minute units with different lamps:
Bed "A" could read 20 on the 5.0 meter & has a max session time of 17 minutes with the 7.0 meter.
Bed "B" could read 26 on the 5.0 meter & has a max session time of 21 minutes.

Bed "B" will be great for beginners, less chance of burn & nice UVA.
Bed "A" will please the more experienced tanners with more immediate color.

I only have a 5.0.

I just worry that a lower 5.0 meter means less tanning!!!

I've explained this a thousand times before... but here it goes again:

The 5.0 meter reading is "browning" rays... mostly UVA.

The 6.0 meter reading is "pinking" rays... mostly UVB.

The 7.0 meter is "reddening" MED/hr rays... the most effective "burning" portion.

You need all three type of rays for good results. Lamps that have higher UVB and MED/hr typically sacrifice UVA to get more "hot" rays at the expense of browning rays. That means the 5.0 will read lower. Yet higher skin types with established tans (and orange frybaby types with tattoos and piercings lol) will prefer the "hotter" rays.

Most skin types appreciate and prefer low-medium UVB with high UVA... like new-era lamps typically have. It's a more gentle, deeper, longer-lasting tan... and does read higher on the 5.0 meter. The "hotter" UVB outputs eventual tan usually is shallower and exfoliates quicker.

Then buy a 7.0 meter & have less to worry about.

The more you know about the lamp the better. 5.0 readings are not enough. I've seen 100W 10 minute lamps meter 15 on the 5.0 & also 100W 20 minute lamps meter 15 on the 5.0.

Those people have NO CLUE what was just told to you in the above posts. Print it out and "edumucate" them. The fewer of them left in the tanning lamp world the better. Some will never change either because they can't understand it... or they just want to pull the wool over your eyes.

They will meter a bit higher when the swirling (mercury balls) stops. That could be in more like 15 hours for 100W tubes... 30-40 hours for 160+W.

That is correct, let the lamps burn in 30-50 hrs, then record your 1st readings.

Still if new lamps are not making your customers happy now I can't see them getting happy with the lamps 30 hours from now. In the past for me the first few sessions yield the best results.

They ARE making his (her) customers happy. He/she just doesn't like the low 5.0 meter readings. Trying to explain that low 5.0 readings just means low UVA.

The 5.0 numbers do not indicate the hot-fry rays.... as I think most people (by now) understand.

Deep-tanned bronze tint people crave high UVA on 5.0 meter.

Shallow-tanned red or orange tint people crave high UVB/MEDs on 6.0 or 7.0 meter.

BOTH types will tan in accordance with their own skin type. Easy as pie. Well - maybe not.

This is why we see 96 Civics with coffee cans and blowers. They don't understand why their car isn't the fastest from the factory.

Civic with blowers and coffee can exhausts:

These are SO fun to blow off with a '64 GTO ! Even my stock Mini Cooper S can keep up with the fast and furious kids.

I don't get the whole - buy a cheap car & then spend $20K making it faster. Why not just buy a fast car to begin with?
